Developing

The story takes place in Delft, a small town in Holland, the Netherlands in the 16th century. In this movie we follow a young girl named Griet, who is in her sixteen years of age and comes from a poor, low -class and hardworking family.

Her father had worked in a factory for her life, until recently, he was affected by an accident, in which he lost one of his two hands and the vision. Because of this, Griet is forced to work as a domestic employee of a wealthy family on the other side of the city to ensure that both dad and his mother will eat every week.

Griet is going to work for this family and turns out to be Johannes Vermeer’s home, a very famous artist. This family is composed of Vermeer’s wife (Catharina), the mother -in. Tanneke, one of the domestic workers, lets Griet know some of the spicy details and secrets of the painter’s life and his family.

Griet’s quiet and reflective way of doing things quickly beats his employers. In the market, the frankness and beauty of Giet attracts the attention of Piter, the son of the butcher of Vermeer’s family, and falls in love with her at first sight.

But it is in Vermeer’s study where Griet feels more comfortable. It is a sacred place for her, and she feels intrigued by the mysteries that surround the art of her employer. Vermeer perceives that this strange person is the only one in his home capable of really appreciating his paintings. And then he teaches him to buy and mix his paintings.

He explains the function of her dark chamber, a device used to create a precise reproduction of a panoramic view or an interior. He challenges her to see the different colors in the clouds and know how to appreciate other wonders around him.

Griet is satisfied with all this attention and she is even more delighted when she gives her a room in the attic so that she can mix her paintings without interruptions. Tensions inside the home increase when catharina is pregnant again. It becomes jealous of her husband’s relationship with Griet.

conclusion

Vermeer’s patron, the rich teacher Van Ruijven establishes a situation in which the artist can secretly paint the maid without his wife knowing, since she never enters her study. Maria, who realizes that they need money a lot, accepts the offer, but warns Griet: you are just a fly on her website like all of us. Vermeer is inspired by the virginal innocence of his new model and the mixture of fear and pleasure that is expressed in his face.
