The Venice Mercader movie

The Venice merchant is a film set in a work by William Shakespeare, which transports us to Venice in 1596 and in a certain way he introduces us to that time, where the Jews were repudiated by their religion and for the worksmoney. These were held in ghettos and had to wear a red hat for easy identification. The film introduces the issue of anti -Semitism taught by Christians, a very common aspect in the 16th century, which led to a large number of Jews were forced to become Christianity, although many continued with their beliefs and practices in secret, inThe interior of their homes.

Exhibition summary

Bassanio in a young nobleman, who wishes to dazzle a good house named Portia, but after wasting all his property, he resorts to his friend Antonio to lend three thousand ducats. Antonio Despite being a great merchant, at the moment he does not have so much effective, but Bassanio finds the Jew Shylock, who agrees to lend him the money in the name of Antonio, but if he cannot return it he must give him a pound of his own meat. After getting the Bassanio money he addresses Belmont along with his friend Gratiano.

Meanwhile, Portia is among a large number of suitors, but according to the testament of his late father, he could only be with the man who opened the right box. There are several princes that try, but fail, until Bassanio finally arrives, who chooses the lead box thus achieving the hand of his beloved portia.

A few days later an Antonio letter arrives saying that after the sinking of his ships it has not been possible. Bassanio after marrying Portia and Gratiano with her maid, they return to Venice with the money that they borrowed to save Antonio.

In Venice a trial begins between Antonio and Shylock, who rejects Bassanio’s money and requires collecting the pound of meat that was agreed. The Duke tries to change his mind to the Jew, but he does not accept, then a lawyer and a young man appear, who are actually Portia and his maid dressed as a man, who try to make Shylock sympathize and accept the money, but he still wants to want themeat. They are preparing Antonio, when Portia uses the contract in their favor by saying that you can only cut a pound of meat, but that it cannot spill a single drop of blood, in addition to having to cut the fair weight, nothing more than orless. Given this, Shylock decides to accept the money, but it is no longer possible because he has publicly rejected it, likeChristianity.

Bassanio and Gratian without knowing that they were their misguided wives, give them as a gift the rings they had received from their part. Already in Belmonte, both make them a joke making them believe that they are angry to give away those rings.

Critical comment

In the work, one of the central themes is the anti -Semitism of the Venice of the 16th century, which in my opinion is a clear reflection of how the Jewish community was seen by the Christians, where the Jews were sinners and who only sought revenge whilethat Christians were the merciful who tried to make them become Christianity in order to be saved, believing that their religion was the only true in the eyes of God.

On the other hand, another aspect that has caught my attention, is that Shylock is seen as the scammer and dishonest, while Portia is making believe that she is a lawyer, to save Bassanio’s friend, thus performing an act of deception criticizedby the Christians themselves against the Jews.

In short, it seems to me a film in which the life and values of the Jews and Christians have been captured in a good way, and in the same way, it can be seen how they enter into great discrepancies, propitiated to its extent by theChristians.

Conclusions

In conclusion, the film shows the great scorn and the great injustice suffered by the Jews by the Christians, although the work can be interpreted of two versions: first of all, it could be a complaint by Shakespeare againstOf the treatment given to the Jews, and, secondly, it could also be a criticism of the Jews.
