The use of technology in the learning process due to COVID-19

Summary

This project aims

COVID-19 pandemia has overturned pedagogical and training universities and organizations, to the use of new technologies for virtual education, to avoid more infections, the Government of Ecuador implements the mandatory quarantine throughout the country by putting it in red traffic light fromThis emerged several questions about how to carry the situation in the educational field was proposed

Introduction

At present, technology is more present than ever and education is not the exemption the veneficies that these new tools have are enormous and one of its greatest virtues is to provide information that is almost immediate and available to everyone

Teaching represents a challenge when finding new dynamics and ways to transmit our knowledge to others especially at the time when information is almost immediate and our socialization dynamics have changed

Virtual education is one of the new teaching methods that technology uses to teach remotely eliminating the barriers from distance

What are virtual classes?

This is a distance education modality that uses technologies – such as email, real -time talks or chats, videos, multimedia systems, etc.- To establish learning between students and teachers without location limitations, that is, without geographical restrictions.

The virtual classroom is a teaching-learning environment, based on telematic applications, in which computer science and communication systems interact. This environment supports collaborative learning among students participating in scattered times and places, through a computers network. This collaborative learning is a learning process where the group effort is highlighted among the various members, who form the educational community

It relies on ICTs (information and communication technology) since it makes use of technological tools and the Internet thus offering adequate and quality environments, virtual education was born as a result of the need for quality educational coverage to people CullaDistance they would not allow you to be a physical place

This also favors teaching improving students training and offers greater support from teachers giving greater academic monitoring of students in charge.

This also has its advantages and disadvantages:

Advantage

  • Flexible schedules
  • Access to information immediately
  • Autonomy in the learning process
  • More coverage

Disadvantages

  • Concentration problems
  • Validate the titles or levels obtained

Impact of Covid-19 Pandemia on education

After the mandatory isolation measure decreed by the National Government, schools, colleges and universities were accepted to television throughout the country

The coronavirus pandemia took the world by surprise. Countries had to close educational systems, given the need for confinement and physical distance between people. Unesco’s proposal was to move the school to home until schools are reopened, resorting to virtual education (online), with teachers as distance mediators and with the face -to -face help of parents.

"However, that half of the world population (51.2%) uses Internet and less than half of households (43%) has a computer at home"

The country was not prepared to implement a National Education System Pandemia showed the enormous technological inequality of the country

Latin America is poorly positioned for the challenge. Its digital ecosystem has an intermediate development compared to other regions of the world. 67% of the population uses Internet, but there are major differences between countries and within each country. In most countries Internet penetration is greater than 60% at an urban level, while at the rural level the penetration averages 10% of the population. As for ages: among children under 15, the percentage of users is less than 50% in several countries and among those over 75 years of age, the percentage does not reach more than 20%. The income level is decisive in Internet access. In households there is increasing connectivity, but the Internet is usually used only as a communication tool and social networks. ‘In other words, Internet penetration is not indicated a high degree of digital resilience of Latin American home’.

The Ecuadorian Society has a weak development of distance education and does not just assimilate what the proposal or the complexity of starting it and in record time consists of. Terminologies are confused: ‘House education’, ‘Distance Education’, ‘Virtual Education’, ‘Online Education’, ‘Online Education’, ‘Teduction’. Social understandings and expectations have been revolving around the virtual, associating distance education with virtual education, so many are pending only access to computers and the Internet (Torres, 2020)

For this, the Government enables the web portal (COVID-19 Educational Plan: Learning together at home) where you detail the school periods of both the Sierra-Amazonia and Costa-Galápagos cycle all corresponding to the school year 2020-2021

It also offers 840 educational resources including modules sheets, audios, videos, digital school texts and access to open educational resources from other countries

This portal has been active since September 2019 as of March 16, 2020 was adequate to serve the country’s health emergency, it is also added the cooperation of television with programs such as Educa that the Government came driving since years ago,But they add a new one called a-pre-grate it

On May 4, 2020, the “A-Pre-Pre-TV” program will be released within the Educa with you. This educational proposal has contents that are directly linked to learning objectives and fundamental concepts that prioritize psycho -emotional support, resilience, empathy, creativity, critical thinking, assertive communication, the generation of safe environments, among others

The Set Program Transmission between 30 minutes at an hour and a half but not only students have had to adapt to these measures but also the teachers who have had to train in the management of ICT more than 80 thousand teachers were virtually trained amongApril and May, some of the platforms that are being used are Google Classroom, Skype and Zoom being this one that has had one of the greatest growth in recent months

Social movements such as “lend your computer” have also emerged from Cuenca that seeks to repair and collect used computers in order to make them available to children and their families especially in rúal areas

The initiative was born from Milton Pérez, president of the College of Electrical and Electronic Engineers of Azuay (CIEELA), who for his work knows in detail the marginal sectors of Cuenca. There, he said, there are homes where, although the Internet service is provided, computers are scarce because everything is handled from a cell phone

For the service to be complete, Pérez commented that they made the Internet service completely free. It is not charged for the installation and the connection is free from 06:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Methodology

This study is qualitative, exploratory-descriptive, that is, identifies the problem and needs that students and teachers have when receiving and imparting virtual classes and is exploratory because it helps define the problem,to develop a strategy and generate hypotheses and identify the variables

Participants

The objective is to analyze the difficulties that students have had when receiving their virtual classes and also knowing their opinion on this methodology that was implemented due to COVID-19

The study population is made up of the members of the UPSE (Peninsular University of Santa Elena)

Research instrument

A survey of 10 questions addressed to the UPSE University students were used through Google Formular website and thus know their opinion and experience with virtual classes

Results

In the results, the opinion of the students and their experience with the virtual classes were announced, in some cases the teachers were not properly trained to teach the virtual classes for this reason the students presented some difficulties at the time of learning and therefore theLack of motivation, most students stated that they prefer face-to-face education to virtual but due to the Covid-19 pandemic

conclusion

No country was prepared for a pandemic not only in the field of education but is many more but specifically Ecuador was a hard challenge to carry out all these changes and more in education. The lack of technological resources was a great barrier united to this in the absence of knowledge of teachers and rapid training of these. However, they have managed to carry out the situation by carrying out their classes providing the student with the opportunity to continue studying remotely, both as teachers and students have cooperated so that this whole educational process is carried out

At present it is common to talk about online education, internet education, virtual education, virtual learning, virtual learning environments, etc. However, it is convenient to ask how virtuality is understood in this context? It has been said that the virtual is what is implicit, which is de facto. (Vera, 2006)

recommendations

  • Teachers must lock asynchronously every time a videoconferencing or a class they must provide students with information or videos that can visualize in any momentary students should not only keep the information that their teachers give it but to seek their self-education seeking reference informationto the topics to be treated and thus contribute to classes making them more dynamics
