The novel "The life of Lazarillo de Tormes and her fortunes and adversities," is a work written in the Spanish Renaissance. Written of the differences in social classes and the offense to the high social classes. The author, anonymous, explains a child’s story during the Golden Age. This narrative is written to "your mercy" and finds a way of describing the experiences of life. The novel presents different topics such as mischief and misery.
Lázaro, narrator of the work, is represented from a very low social class. The work represents the most negative part of the time. Lázaro criticism in the work are about the nobility and clergy, for his experiences of Lázaro and his masters. Demonstrate their mischief and traps actions on their masters to survive their unfortunate times. All the masters that Lázaro had a bad luck to find, they mistreated Lázaro for hungry and so that he did not die had to look for any way of living.
In Lázaro de Tormes, when Lázaro was with the cleric thought he was going better because he is a cleric and they are kind people of the church, but it was not so. Saying that Spain allegedly had the image of being very religious. The cleric contradicts the principle of charity to demonstrate the sin of not feeding those who suffer like Lazarus. This changes the image that Spain will want to propose to people because having bad clergy. And this example gives how the Church and the nobility is.
And another example of social critic is the first master of Lazarus, the blind man, although they should help those who need Spain. Asking for alms was the only way that the master survived;This teaches how they treat people with needs, but Spain wanted to maintain the image of being rich and not the image of the poor although they were in difficult situations. Just like the lazarus change from masters to the squire, he did not want to ruin his reputation that people know he was poor, maybe Spain also had that mentality. And for him being poor, he says that royalty does not have to give work and are in economic problems.
From literature we can learn how people and the difficulties that were happening. Social criticism in the work works as a topic. He tells us what society was during that time. Lazarillo de Tormes is a work that gives us a mental image of the condition of people’s life and the evil of corrupt systems because it demonstrates the misery that people who did not have the same privileges of the nobility or the church.
