According to the critic and film historian David Thomson "when the film was proposed, there were fears, especially in Great Britain, there was talk that the film would be dangerous", this due to the "appeasement policy" of Neville Chamberlain, prime minister of theUnited Kingdom, which was imposed before World War II, because of the horrors left by the First World War.
Since it was the most violent conflict that had appeared until the time and for which the majority of politicians in Europe wanted to maintain peace with Nazi Germany and that allowed the constant rapes of the third Reich government to international treaties. Thus, in 1940 for when the events surpassed everything imagined and the world entered war, they assured that the film became a great success.
Except for Germany, Chaplin’s film made a stir around the world. "The great dictator", along with many other films of that time, was prohibited.
