Sexual harassment in the workplace of Peru

Sexual harassment is the sexual behavior or behavior that is directed with the purpose of physically and psychologically affecting the victim. Unfortunately the victims are mostly women. 

This social problem is present in almost all social spheres. In this article we will talk about harassment in the workplace, since it is one of the most recurring society problems that happen to most workers in our country. 

Unfortunately the State, due to its lack of authority and management, does nothing about it to solve. So, workers have to endure this nightmare in their work centers.

The main consequence is the affectation of employment that consists in the worker or worker being forced to work in a hostile, offensive and/or humiliating work environment, created by several sexual behaviors of severe or serious enough. 

According to the statistics of the Defense and Legal Advice of the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion (2018) only 115 consultations on sexual harassment at work were attended. Unfortunately, the victims of sexual harassment at work do not denounce their stalker due to shame, fear of being questioned or the lack of recognition of the problem. 

In 2003, Congress published ¨The Law on Prevention and Sanction of Sexual Hosting¨ that, despite having had positive results, the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion mentions that said law must be strengthened and prioritized, since according to Sunafil (2018) Sexual harassment in the workplace suffers by 2 out of 5 workers.

Sadly sexual harassment in labor relations is far from disappearing in Peru. However, it is possible, at least, to reduce this problem if the State prioritizes to help victims. For example, first, to have a policy of prevention of sexual harassment at work, and informing all workers in knowledge. This should allow sanctioning companies that allow this uncertainty. 

Second, train workers on sexual harassment. Preventing these behaviors from developing within companies. And, thirdly, ask the media (newspapers, television network, etc.) With the help of the State, create advertising campaigns against sexual harassment in all areas by raising citizens and informing news about people victims of harassment. 

In conclusion, the present cases allow us to exemplify the problem worked and thus generate awareness, in order to be a fair society.
