Sexual Education in Mexico: Sexually Transmitted Diseases
The lack of sex education in Mexico is a serious problem that has not been given sufficient importance. Especially, some people in the country refuse that this type of education is received in Mexico, without knowing that when not receiving it there can be many consequences for women. The consequences today can be seen in the population. Unwanted pregnancies, violations due to lack of knowledge, sexually transmitted diseases, etc. That is why you can currently see that women in Mexico do not receive enough sex education to make good decisions throughout their lives.
Mexico is a country in which sex education is not highly taught to the population and is not given sufficient importance for the population to realize that many of the things that are happening in the country are due to lack of this same. For a long time, in Mexico and in the world, sexuality was a topic of which one could not speak at all, it was frownedPeople against knowledge about this, especially parents who do not want this to speak in schools, today is an issue we can talk about more. According to an article on the Public Health page of Mexico, it is said that only 3% to 7% of students have received information about sex education.
Mexico is one of the countries with the highest number of unwanted pregnancies. Unwanted pregnancies are one of the greatest problems we have in our country, according to WHO (World Health Organization), it is estimated that in Mexico there are 750 thousand and one million abortions per year. These statistics mark from clandestine abortions to legal abortions. According to the OECD world ranking (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) it was recorded that 65 out of every 1,000 pregnancies are teenagers. According to Daniela Ramírez, spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood, it has been shown that, upon receiving sex education both in schools and at home, the pregnancy amounts and the rate of adolescent births in the United States have decreased in the United States. In 2014, in Latin America the number of pregnancies decreased by 50%.
In Mexico, sexually transmitted diseases are more common than it seems, according to the IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute) and the IMPOBAE page 30% of people between 18 and 30 are or had a diseasesexually transmitted. Each year there are 376 million new cases of infections and only ETS (sexually transmitted disease) of syphilis caused approximately 200.000 fetal and newborn deaths according to WHO. This is a clear example of what is necessary sex education in this country. Sex education teaches people to take care of their body, to know it and how to make good decisions on this issue and, above all, the consequences that lack of knowledge can bring. According to Ana Karen García and her article on the El Economista page, only 7 out of 10 (69.2%) fertile women use or have ever used some contraceptive method, from 2014 to 2018, only 2 increased.5% The total women with knowledge of these methods thanks to the sexual education provided to them.
Currently, there is the problem of violations in our country, a problem that is bigger every day. According to an article on the Excelsior page, in 2019 approximately 38 thousand 357 cases of sexual abuse in Mexico were registered, 265 cases per month. We know that violations are acts of unseen sexual violence, a percentage of these cases are in minors, which are victims of abuse at an early age. Some of these cases are because children, being very young, do not know what is right and what’s wrong, because they do not know their body, they have not told him how it works, how to take care of it. According to Save Children, an English association dedicated to protecting children in these cases, they consider that the law must implement teachers to teach compulsory sexual education. They comment that only 3 out of 10 children make their cases of sexual abuse reach a court. This is one of the many reasons why it is important that since children learn the importance of knowing their body and all the external factors that can be faced someday, they would be more prepared for any situation.
Religion has always been an impediment to the implementation of sex education. The INEGI (National Institute of Statistics and Geography) launched a graph in which it was determined that in 5 years the percentage of people participating in some religion increased, thus, in 2010, 84,217,138 people were recorded in the world. In an article in the newspaper La Left, the subject of religion and sexual education is discussed, how religion finds it and why it is believed that it is not a good idea that is implemented in schools, we know that in religion the issue ofSexuality is frowned upon and for example, you can only have sex once marriage is contracted, contraceptive methods are seen as a way of aborting, lust, desire, etc. All this, for religion, is a sin, but they have not seen all the problems that the country has, they do not think about people’s health and how this shortage of knowledge in their lives affects them.
Sexual education helps to increase tolerance and respect for gender diversity that today exists. According to the article on page UNAF, a survey was conducted in more than 37 educational centers, where it was revealed that 90% of the students recognized that there is homophobia in the classrooms, which leads to a rejection for some people whoare found in these institutions. It is said that 10% of students who have revealed their sexual orientation have suffered from homophobic physical aggressions. In sex education they respect gender diversity and teach that others also do so, because they do not use stereotypes to teach.
Sex education in both Mexico and the world is a very delicate issue, but at the same time too important, I think that, if applied, impart in a effectively knowledge, the country could leave many stereotypes aside and concentrate on developingplus the potential you have. Like. We all have the right to have knowledge of this issue, but it is not achieved because the government does not want people to know more than they consider "should". In order for a change in the country, the population must be well educated, they must change the way of thinking that they have to make the country stagnant, education is everything and it is the only way to make Mexico advance.
