Reading comprehension strategies

Introduction.

Learning to read is an activity that we do little by little since we are very small. Our whole life depends on the way we use the language and skill we have to speak and write, but also of course, to understand what others speak and write. It is very important for each person to understand and relate the text to the meaning of the words.  Considering that reading comprehension is the primary instrument of learning and development of human beings;It is important to have strategies that contribute to improve this understanding.

Developing

Reading understanding: It is the ability to understand what is read, both in reference to the meaning of the words that form a text and with respect to global understanding in a writing. For a reading comprehension, strategies must be applied to succeed in the dialogue that we maintain. 

Basic Read. It is feeling the desire to discover that we are going to find in the text.

Reading processes

  • Pre reading: We must give way to curiosity, make an exploratory reading and achieve some familiarity with the text;Before entering a deep reading. You start by browding the book, reading the index and reading important subtitles.
  • Reading: At this review stage, we must first identify what type of text we are going to read and what is its predominant function. It is important to identify what is the communicative function chosen by the author and also determine the function of the language used;Find the main and secondary ideas. We can use underlined techniques, keyword circles, different colors, etc.
  • Post Reading: In this part we can see how much the reader has understood, you can start by writing a summary of the text with its own words, with sumillas or extracts of main ideas. You can also prepare a scheme containing the main ideas, secondary ideas and, if necessary, support ideas. Understanding of the text according to the meaning of the words: a broad vocabulary must be handled to understand what we are reading, both in reference to the meaning of the words that form a text and with respect to global understanding in a writing.

Techniques for the understanding of a text: Context: Set of circumstances surrounding a situation and without which it cannot be correctly understood.

There are words that, even being unknown to us, its meaning is deduced by context, since it is linked to other words within the text, without having to go to the dictionary. Word family: The common part of words is called the root, also known as lexema. The root of a word is the part of the word that does not change. From a root we can form words that are related by their meaning. 

Word relationship:

  • Synonymy: It is defined as the relationship between two or more lexical units with different significant and equal meaning. Example: die, die.
  • Antonymy: opposition relationship between the meanings of two words. Example: Happy is sad.
  • Analogies: similarity relationship between different things. Example: milk is cow
  • Homonymous: It occurs between two words of opposite meanings. Example: cold / hot.
  • Monosmic monosic: it is not possible to confuse them, since their meaning is one;From there derives the word "mono" that means "one". Example: abdomen.
  • Hyperonyms: to that general term that can be used to refer to the reality named for a more specific term. Example: Flowers: Rose, Margarita, Jasmine, Clavel, Magnolias.
  • Parónimas: are those that are written and pronounced in a similar way, but whose meanings are different. Example: Amoral (lacking moral) / immoral (impudent).

conclusion

Reading understanding is the basis of the interpretation of a text, regardless of whether it is a reading, for studies or to acquire new knowledge. It is a daily and automated practice of human beings.
