Name: Professor’s name: Course: Date: Analysis of “love is my sin” by William Shakespeare The speaker of the poem is a man talking to a woman. The poem is a narration of love gone sour between the man and woman. The man is in pain, and he is trying to get the woman to forgive him or accept him back. Some words have a connotative meaning. For instance, the author says in the first line that “love is my sin” which may be implying that the speaker perceives love to be worse than hell. There are no words with a special meaning in the poem. The poem has one repeated word “love.” The words of the poem paint an image of a man in tears. In this regard, there is no single word that is symbolic, but the combination of all the words creates an image of a sad man. This is because the man portrays a melancholy attitude throughout the poem. For instance, he says "Root pity in thy heart, that when it grows” (Foundation 1). This shows a man in deep thoughts and perhaps looking towards the heavens as he ponders his situation. The author has also used figure of speech, the eighth line which reads “Robb’d others’ beds’ revenues of their rents” has a hidden meaning that can be interpreted as stealing married men from their marital homes. The author uses a sad tone which is evident from the first line when he likens love to sin. He also says that the woman’s greatest virtue is hate. All this shows that the man is saddened as he continues to beg for forgiveness for cheating on his wife with another woman. The theme of the poem is love considering the number of times the word has been used but in different forms. Lastly, the author uses alternating rhyming
