Public School and its Educational System

Introduction

First of all we have to know the meaning that school has in the education system. According to Berger & Luckmann, school is a necessary social institution. It belongs to the framework of secondary socialization being a very important socializing agent. Another fundamental issue is what is it for? The school has two general functions that are the following: some are the manifest functions and the others are the latent functions.

Developing

The first that are known, explicit, legitimized and written in writing such as: academic function or formative. And the second are hidden, invisible, unknown, are not expected by the actors involved and what most defines them is that they are the consequence of the previous ones, the manifest. However, they do not end there, but within each one there are two more functions within the first and three functions in the second.

To respond to: Is the school made for the benefit of society as a whole or for the ruling class and to what extent? We have to know some of the following theories. One of them is the functionalist theories of education. In these theories, as Feito Alonso (sociological theories of education) says, the functionalists suggest that we should start knowing some concept. In their theory, institutions (family, economic institutions, policies, religious and education, is being the most important that we will talk below) are those that solve the problems.

conclusion

Manifest functions are divided into academic function, which needs an expert knowledge to transmit intellectual habits, the ability to observe or synthesis analysis; And in the formative, they prepare for the training of work and distribution of social positions. Latent functions are divided between socializing and cohesion function, the function of being a participant in social reproduction processes and the last, transforming function.

The socializing and cohesion function internalizes social values and norms, connects the "I" with society, among other characteristics. The following, to be a participant in social reproduction processes, reproduces the dominant or subordination positions, therefore, is made for the upper class to legitimize its position. And the last, are the schools that can correctly carry diversity and develop the recognized potential.
