Nursing roots are firmly anchored in service to others: individuals, groups and communities. Nurses have ventured the nursing profession to help people and meet health care needs in society. The service orientation is evident in the oath of Florence Nightingale, which has been pronounced by millions of nurses since the end of the 19th century. The learning process incorporates aspects that define the nurse as a professional since it begins in the interaction with the educational process until its nursing career completes. Society greatly influences the public image of the nursing professional. Nurses through organizations have had the opportunity to contribute to changes in the profession over the years. The nurse must know the processes that shape the nursing professional beyond the occupation and how professionals develop as individuals.

Nursing professionalism is defined as the process by which nursing occupation manages to acquire a professional status where the value that society gives to the work of nurses and the centrality of this work for the good of society. Florence Nightingale (1860) established that the nursing goal is to "put the patient in the best conditions so that nature can heal wounds". This is the essence of nursing practice that is reflected in contemporary nursing. The knowledge, skills and ethical foundation of the nurse directly affect the quality of the care paid. The values of the profession have given direction and meaning to their members, guide nursing behaviors, and are essential in clinical decision making and influence how nurses think about themselves. Although the skills change and evolve over time, the fundamental values of nursing persist and communicate through the Code of Ethics for Nurses according to the American Nursing Association (Ana, 2011).

The socialization process is the learning process of the skills, roles and values of the profession, resulting in the development of identity as a professional. Implies the internalization of values and norms making them part of what the person is as a nurse. The individual conception of what it means to be a nurse and act as a nurse initially occurs through education and then extends to the work environment. The process occurs through roles modeling and reinforcement of socially relevant behaviors.

Nursing socialization begins in basic nursing training where as students learn theories that will apply in practice, continue when the nurse with experience changes roles in their work field or in some organization and ends when the professional assumes a leadership rolewhere applies all the knowledge that was taught over the years and acquired during his work experience. To provide unique care to patients with different cultures, nurses carefully should integrate cultural traditions, values and beliefs in the patient’s care plan. Leininger’s theory (1991) recognizes the importance of culture and its influence on everything that surrounds the patient, including his beliefs in health, the role of family and community and their food practices.

Patient care is individual and unique. The effectiveness of care nurses depend on how they exercise their role as empathic communicators and learn about different cultures to identify and know the patient’s needs. Socialization models identify progression that occurs by learning new roles in professional practices. In socialization there must be adaptation to the continuous change of roles. Nurses must be aware and understanding of the environmental factor that can improve or restrict the professional practice of nursing.

The socialization process includes important factors that when the nurse is already on the work stage and can mean a challenge. The establishment of highly bureaucratic practices and non -solidarity with the nursing professional can create conflicts in the decision making of the organization about the practice of the nurse. Offering patients care requires experience in different areas of care. The nurse must learn to balance the values of her profession and those of the organization to facilitate the process and significantly reduce the amount of stress and conflicts.

Participation in professional organizations is one of the attributes of the professional nurse since they allow them to have the opportunity to actively participate and collaborate in future changes within the profession. Nurses who participate actively can amplify their impact on the care and health of society supporting professional associations. The contribution of nursing in medical care is illustrated by the nature and diversity of its nursing roles. In its essence, the nursing profession requires a renewed vision of the patient’s well -being and a commitment to the society for the well -being of all. The nurse must demonstrate good judgment, critical thinking and commitment in caregiver role. In practice and education they serve as a model of roles, preceptors and mentors to guide the new practitioners in their process of socialization and responsibilities in professional development. Society is complex and constantly changing, through learning processes nursing profession.
