National Identity: Argumentative Text

Introduction

Personal and collective identities.

Personal and collective identities are interrelated and are needed reciprocally. This is because people cannot be considered as isolated and opposed entities to a social world conceived as an external reality. Hence, collective identity is the environment and result of the individual identities to which it recursively organizes.

Identity and globalization

Globalization refers to the intensification of universal social relations that unite to different locations, so that what happens in a town is affected by events that occur very far and vice versa. Covers a multiplicity of other social and cultural dimensions. The phenomenon of cultural globalization is especially relevant to identity. If globalization has a very important cultural dimension, it is partly due to the mediatization of modern culture. The global does not replace the local, but the local operates within the logic of the global.

In itself, a collective identity is purely a cultural artifact … as in the case of the nation … what is said of the nation is also applicable to other cultural identities such as sexuality, ethnicity, social class, gender, etc. … Each cultural identity demands a different amount of commitment of each individual member … and this can change historically. Cultural identities are not static. Therefore, collective identities begin historically, they develop and can decline or disappear.
