Music as a didactic method for the inclusion of people with disabilities

Introduction

The present research tries to highlight the importance of music as a didactic method, for the integral development and inclusion of people with disabilities in the social, family and workplace.

The development of the present research study has been generated throughout the educational module supporting us in the few research texts about the subject raised, it is because of this lack of research that we feel the need to manifest, base and demonstrate that music is aGreat communication and learning channel for people with disabilities.

In the development of this research, it is about highlighting the importance of musical discipline as a didactic resource through the practical part of the project.

The practical part of the project that is divided into two parts that are: the theoretical and the proposal. The proposal that consists in developing and using creative and innovative intervention techniques focused on the elaboration, application and use of music didactic material, to work on the integral development of people with disabilities.

Developing

The didactic method is a scientific and pedagogical discipline that constitute a set of procedures that direct learning towards the fulfillment of a objective of a specific topic, whose purpose is the training and integral development of one or a group of people. This didactic method is subject to verification and rectification, solves problems through research, collaboration, teamwork and presentation of results. Its purpose is to achieve learning meaning through innovative and creative solutions.

Inclusive education focuses on educational care to people who present any type of physical or sensory disability that are at social, economic or cultural risk that does not allow them to follow the normal rhythm of the teaching-learning process and who arestigmatized by society. Through these special attention, it is intended to achieve the maximum development of the possibilities and capacities of these people who facilitate a better quality of life in all areas and their integration into society.

Disabilities are understood as the complete restriction or absence of the ability to carry out an activity in the form or within the margin considered normal for a human being. It is the deficiency of the functional performance of the activity of the individual either of the physical, intellectual or sensory capacity, as well as a ailment that requires medical care or a mental illness. Among the types of disabilities we have:

  • Psychic or intellectual disability
  • Hearing disability
  • Visual disability
  • Motor disability

 

It can be affirmed that music is not only pleasant, but also contributes to developing and enhancing many aspects of the human being, motor, cognitive and affective partner. It is a fundamental didactic instrument of learning, since it helps to stimulate and enrich the skills of people with disabilities.

Learning through music allows stimulating the mind, it is an excellent way to develop abilities and skills. It is the effective didactic method for motor, cognitive, affective and social development, since it intends to help the development of people with different types of disabilities.

Music as a didactic method has the purpose that people with different types of disabilities benefit in such a way that they can increase their ability to express feelings and thoughts through songs and melodies;enhance the exchange between its inner world and the environment, increase vocabulary and learning ability through songs.

Music is a channel that helps to facilitate people with compensatory behaviors, increase their self – esteem, offers them the means to express themselves socially acceptable, it provides opportunities to assume responsibilities, increases social interaction, facilitates learning the learning ofSocial skills, motor skills, communication skills and helps to enhance the cognitive area.

Music as leisure activity can be a tool for people with disabilities to use in their free time. That is why through this proposal we want to get participants to be able to express their feelings, work their body through music, develop their creativity and above all that they feel part of society. To achieve this purpose, measures, support and adaptations that may be necessary in each activity will be included according to the characteristics of each person, favoring the true inclusion.

The proposal, of this investigation, is that each session will have a 30-minute time in which the facilitator will offer socio-emotional support through the use of music, attending to the different needs of each of the participants, giving it greater emphasisto the development of self – esteem, to the strengthening of autonomy, the expression and regulation of emotions.

SESSION 1

Through this activity, it is intended that participants express their emotions with painting and music. To do this, attendees have to paint, letting their imagination fly from the hand of music, creating stories that will come to life or figures detached from the musical atmosphere, always filtered by their own subjectivity and by the mood that the participant has in the developmentof the activity. They can select dark colors if music produces sadness or light colors if they produce joy. They must paint while listening to the story that is emerging. At the end of the activity, they must share their paintings created by their feelings stimulated by that music, with the rest of the companions.

Session 2

This activity consists in using body expression to seek the development of imagination, play pleasure, improvisation and creativity. In this way, people with disabilities will learn to handle the body and move in space;This will help each of the participants discover their own body language.

Music will be used so that participants express their emotions with free body movements, which produce different music styles they are listening to. Participants can verify that each type of music expresses various feelings through their lyrics and melodies which causes people to react in different ways, that is, that each of the participants can have positive or negative feelings. As a variant of this activity we will select one of the participants who will wear a helmet so that the rest of their classmates cannot listen and identify the music that he chose. The selected participant must represent through body movements that type of music is listening and the feelings that produce it,

The type of music that will be used will be from classical to pop. In this way, it is intended that through different types of songs they will be able to express and communicate, face their own fears and concerns and so they can know their body and have more dominion over him. In this session you can discover that each person has different ways of moving, dancing, and expressing themselves.

Conclusions

Music is a technique that significantly improves the deficiency of people with disabilities, favoring emotional development, motor skills, and affectivity. Musical discipline has many benefits and that is why it should be considered indispensable that it is part of the education of people with and without disabilities, therefore, music is not only a means of expression, but the path to develop other capacities andskills.

Therefore, it should be successful that the education and social welfare authorities of our country implement musical discipline as an offer that can become an effective tool for the disability collective to improve its integral development and have a feeling of integration into thesociety.
