Meditation is a discipline practiced in the eastern world for hundreds of years, due its apparent benefits in the health and well -being of those who are delivered to it regularly. However, in the western world it is a relatively recent practice and that has become a trend in recent years thanks to the wide diffusion of related practices, such as yoga and mindfulness, on social networks.

And, today it is difficult not to meet someone close who has not practiced any mode of meditation;However, making a review of literature find that opinions regarding the benefits of this practice are very ambiguous. Even so, in recent years there has been a significant increase in the recommendation of this practice by health professionals, especially in the treatment of chronic diseases;which leads us to ask ourselves some questions.

Why can meditation be considered an effective therapy for pain?

In 2011, in The Journal of Neuroscience, a study was published in which the reaction that produced a painful stimulus in the cerebral cortex was observed, before and during a state of meditation. It was determined that indeed, there was a reduction in pain by an average of 40%.

That same year, a meta -analysis published by the Journal of Psychology of Iztacala in which data from 33 publications were analyzed, revealed the constant practice of meditation is effective for the management of intrusive thoughts, dysfunctional emotions, stress and process self-controlphysiological.

These are only two examples that demonstrate the interest that the subject has aroused in the scientific community in the last 20 years. However, this practice has its detractors.

A recent BBC article brought a not well -known aspect of meditation to the fore. According to the publication, a small percentage of the people who carry out this practice may suffer panic crises, depersonalization, deserto and even psychosis. This can be explained, because in some cases the practice of full attention can face us with feelings of anguish, pain or deep despair, and not all have the tools to deal with them;It is also possible that externalize pre -existing mental conditions.

Despite the controversy, what is undeniable is that with meditation we are able to generate new forms of thought, since it involves an increase in neuronal plasticity through the creation of new synapses.

In Ecuador, the practice of meditation is still relegated to individuals and establishments that offer spiritual healing therapies mediated by Gurús, Yogis or Psychotherapists. However, more and more health professionals are opening to consider it a therapy for patients with chronic pain. As for the complex territory of mental illnesses, there is not much documentation regarding the implementation of mindfulness in therapeutic way in the country, so its implementation is at the discretion of each specialist.
