Medicinal marijuana to treat migraine

There is nothing like a migraine. The American Migraine Foundation (AMF) estimates that more than one billion people worldwide suffer the weakening pain of migraines. With 1 in 5 women, 1 in 16 men and 1 in 11 children who deal with the effects that change the lives of migraines, it is not surprising that CBD and marijuana are often mentioned as a means of therapy.

The doctor. Stephen Silberstein, director of the headache center at the Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, recently published an article with the AMF that showed the benefits and risks of the CBD and THC for those who experience migraines. He states: ‘If you have a lot of pain or neck pain, it is perfectly reasonable to use CBD oil. It can even prevent nausea and vomiting ”, symptoms are often associated with an episode of severe migraine.

The doctor. Silberstein also points out that while CBD and medicinal marijuana are not yet legal in all states, patients should consult their doctor and investigate where their CBD is manufactured to make sure it is labeled correctly.

Are there studies to show other benefits that CBD offers those who have migraines?

A study by the University of Colorado, published in the Pharmacotherapy magazine, showed that the frequency of migraines in patients who used cannabis decreased from 10.4 per month at 4.6, a number that is statistically and clinically significant. In addition, the secondary results showed that the different cannabis delivery routes had different strengths: smoked marijuana, which reaches the bloodstream almost instantly, was the best to treat acute migraines. On the other hand, the groceries, which take much more to metabolize, helped prevent headaches.

The association of migraine disorders shared a first -hand story by Michelle Tracy, who explained his fear and doubts to test the CBD and marijuana to combat migraines. Its convincing story serves as a reminder that, often, when patients are told, ‘there is nothing more than can be done’, we can cause weakening stress and confusion. Travis closes its story with: ‘I am still optimistic that there is even more help as more research is carried out and that marijuana becomes even more socially acceptable’.

While CBD offers therapy above and beyond recipes, May Clinic cites that patients should also know the risks. ‘Although it is often tolerated well, the CBD can cause side effects, such as dry mouth, diarrhea, decrease in appetite, drowsiness and fatigue’. For those who spend days in the dark, it may be time to bring CBD to your medical care team to investigate whether it is a viable solution for their migraines.
