What have been the maximum sports tragedies?

They are present in different disciplines, such as football, motoring or rugby, and are remembered by sport fans even many years after happened. These are some of the maximum sports tragedies:

1. Munich massacre

This was what the terrorist attack that happened during the 1972 Olympic Games was called to the terrorist attack. A group of athletes from the Israeli Olympic Committee were taken hostage and then killed by a Palestinian group known as ‘September September.

The episode began on September 4, 1972 at dawn, when the terrorist group entered the Olympic complex and took nine athletes hostages. The kidnappers announced their demands and after a failed rescue the athletes were killed before being rescued.

two. Superga tragedy

It happened in May 1949 and cost the entire Torino Soccer team in Italy. When the players returned from playing a friendly match against Benfica in Portugal, the plane crashed into the Superga Basilica, in Turin’s hill. In addition to the players, directors and employees of the club, journalists and the entire crew died.

As a solidarity gesture, the Argentine team River Plate organized a match for the benefit of the relatives of the deceased, against a combined Italian series.

3. Hillsborough tragedy

This event took place in April 1989 at the Hillsborough stadium, from England, during a match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest for the FA Cup semifinals.

After an avalanche, the supporters of the Network were crushed against the fences: 96 of them died. According to investigations, excess spectators and the poor state of the stadium (which did not comply with safety standards) were the causes of said tragedy.

Something quite ‘curious’ is that Liverpool had already lived another similar case four years before, in what is known as ‘Heyel’s tragedy’, in the homonym stadium of Brussels, Belgium. There was the final of the European Champions League between the English team and Juventus in Italy. On that occasion, however, the deceased were the supporters of the Italian team, 39 people in total.

4. Le Mans disaster

The Le Mans circuit, known for his 24 -hour career, had a black day on June 11, 1955, so far the greatest tragedy in motor racing.

In the middle of the race and in a few seconds the drama began. French pilot Pierre Levegh hit Austin Healey more than 200 kilometers per hour. His Mercedes car exploded against one of the stands disintegrating completely and taking the pilot’s life. In the accident they died in total 83 spectators.

As a consequence of this tragedy, many of the policies in the world races were changed, such as the incorporation of the seat belt, the helmets and the containment fences.

5. Miracle of the Andes

Again a plane crash between the most resonant sports tragedies. This happened in October 1972 and the protagonists were the members of a Uruguayan rugby team, known as Old Christians.

The plane that took them to Santiago de Chile to play a game crashed in a cliff of the Andes mountain range. Of the 45 occupants of the plane (5 crew), 16 were rescued 16. The remaining 29 died in the accident or the wounds caused in the same.

It is called ‘miracle of the Andes’ because the survivors were more than two months lost between snow and mountains, until they could be rescued, in three stages (the last one day before Christmas).

Other sports tragedies that are worth highlighting are Puerta 12 (71 Boca Juniors supporters died at the exit of a match against River Plate) and Munich’s tragedy (plane crash where 23 Manchester United soccer players died).
