Machismo and its effects on women

Machismo is a term that covers many aspects; Therefore, it has many definitions.  Some define it as the way of thinking or the attitude that man possesses, which commonly makes decisions (as in the case of the home; because he is considered the ‘boss’, the ‘protector’ and ‘home support‘)

On the other hand, machismo is considered for the majority as an ideology whose main axis is to promote the denial of women as subjects, regardless of their origin, culture and context. It refers to the behaviors, attitudes and beliefs that foster this type of behavior . This denial can be present in different environments, such as:

  • Family environment: existence of patriarchal family structures
  • Sexual environment: Believe in female inferiority by making it a passive subject.
  • Economic and labor environment: the lack of employment assessment results in women to believe that it will always produce less income.
  • Legislative environment: not being represented in the laws and not being considered a citizen. In addition, the absence of laws with the purpose of their protection.
  • Intellectual Development Environment: Believe that there is an inferiority in its intellectual coefficient and a low development of their skills.
  • Historical environment: by hiding many women who have achieved great feats throughout history.
  • Communicative and advertising environment: use of women as a sexualized object to capture public attention.

Another definition covers discrimination against other social groups, such as the homosexual community .  According to feminist groups, it refers to the ‘set of sexist practices and attitudes that promote the submission and discrimination of women’ in addition, it is considered that machismo is linked to heterogenero or homophobic behavior.

What causes women ?

1.Depression and stress

Some actors that can increase the risk of depression in women include the following:

  • Unequal power and status: women are much more prone than men to live in poverty, which causes concerns such as the future and the decrease in access to community resources and medical care. These problems can cause feelings of negativity, low self – esteem and lack of life control.
  • Work overload: often women work outside the home and still have domestic responsibilities. Many women face maternity challenges without a couple, for example, working in several places to earn enough money. In addition, women can take care of sick or elderly relatives, and not only their children, which causes a greater burden of stress when trying to get enough money.
  • Sexual or physical abuse: women who are emotional, physically or sexually abused as girls or adults are more likely to suffer depression at some point in their lives than those who did not suffer abuse. Women are more likely to be mistreated than men because they are currently used as a provocative object in most cases .

This factor (depression) brings other conditions such as:

  • The anxiety .
  • Eating disorders .
  • Addiction drugs and alcoholism

Heart -related diseases can cause women to the following complications:

  • Heart failure
  • Heart attack

  • Aneurysm .
  • Peripheral arterial disease .
  • Sudden cardiac detention

3.  Anorexia and eating disorders

When a person is anorexic, his body does not absorb or take advantage of the necessary energy obtained from food. Advanced anorexia can cause the following complications:

  • Heart problems, including low blood pressure, slower heart rate, irregular heartbeat, heart attacks and sudden death due to heart problems 5
  • Decrease in bone mass (osteopenia and osteoporosis)
  • Kidney calculations or stones
  • Absence of periods, which can cause difficulty in conceiving
  • During pregnancy, a greater risk of abortion, caesarean section or low birth weight of the baby.

conclusion

Machismo is a trend that today has denigrated and greatly excluded women. Machista violence is a social tragedy. Your answer requires measures, not only blunt, but particular. We must all rebel at any time and anywhere: in the media, in social networks, in private meetings … each of us must act, for heaven, earth, sea and air against sexist attitudes,Its consequences are too serious to inhibit us

However, and even at the risk of repeating me, although responsibility requires us to all, we must emphasize that the regeneration of society goes through the classroom. Horror will not be contained if they do not sensitize and educate our children to work for an egalitarian society in which gender roles disappear, a youth that transmits free -free values, where the submission of girls or the superiority of boys. It is everyone’s job to build a better world.

Therefore, gender violence must be addressed as a structural problem and fight from a new perspective, leaving the burden of getting out of abuse only for women. As advisable, ‘point out machismo’ in the face of everyday behaviors and situations that normally cover perpetuate stereotypes and sexist inequality.
