Literary resources: Structure in literary texts


A literary text is a type of text characterized by the predominance of poetic function, but, in addition, in each genre, other functions predominate, such as lyric, narrative and drama. They are all those in which an author expresses his feelings, ideas, emotions, through the creation of new worlds, for which he uses their description through prose (story or novel texts), and verses (poetry) anddirect dialogues such as theatrical works.


It is an oral or written form that privileges aesthetic, poetic and recreational forms above the informative content or objective of the message. Literary texts pose subjective and free approaches to reflective, experiential or contemplative content of reality, with the aim of generating emotions in the reader. The purpose of a literary text is artistic, the writer’s inventiveness is used to create an attractive style text with a refined and rich language in order to attract the reader’s attention.

Characteristics of a literary text

  • Poetic function: the way in which the text is written. Where creativity and expressive capacity play a fundamental role.
  • Subjectivism: The author’s brand in the text is something superimporting. It cannot be based on objective data, but must reflect the author’s personal perspective.
  • Language and style: uses the language of unconventional, daring or avant -garde ways;They follow an aesthetic purpose, using a beautiful and adorned language through the use of literary resources.
  • Express deep or deep philosophical content.
  • Functionality: play with the reader’s mind to transfer the boundaries between fiction and reality. Most of them are totally fictitious, but in some cases we can find this ambiguity between the two.
  • Representation of reality: Imitate the reality in which it is supposedly found. That is, it tells events that did not take place, or even real events, but from fictional, impossible or novel perspectives.

Structure of literary texts:

Literary texts are classified as: narrative, dramatic or lyrical.

  • Narrative texts. These are prose -written compositions. They contain a story about a real or fictional event, displaced in time and space. Among this type of text, the novel and the story stand out.
  • Dramatic or lyrical texts. These texts offer as a panorama the conflict between two or more persono/es;The development of the work is aimed at presenting how this conflict develops and what is its link.
  1. Tragedy: There is talk of tragedy when the main character is physically or morally destroyed.
  2. Drama: It is said that a work is dramatic if the salvation or destruction of the character depends on it.
  3. Comedy: When a light phono predominates in the work, it has a happy ending, it is said that it is a comedy.

These genres are called literary genres, and have two types of internal and external structures:

• Narrative genre:

Internal structure: introduction, knot and outcome.

External structure: paragraphs and chapters.

• Drama:

Internal structure: introduction, knot and outcome.

External structure: pictures, acts and scenes.

• Lyric:

External structure: verses grouped in stanzas.

Types of literary texts

• Narrative. This genre includes the short story, the novel, the micro story, the literary chronicle and other forms of the story, real or imaginary, fantastic or realistic, which emphasizes the characters, the network of the action and the figure of the narrator to generateIn the reader expectation, tension and other similar emotions.

• Poetry. It is the most free of literary arts, because it does not understand virtually no rule that defines what is or is not a poem, except its purpose of capturing feelings, existential perspectives, reflections or even a certain degree of narration, but in the absence of defined characters, well -defined narrators or instances. Formerly, it was elaborated in rhymes and verses counted by number of syllables, but today it is considered that a poem can acquire any type of established form and structure, obeying its own and inexplicable musicality.

• Dramaturgy. Dramatic writing is that whose representation is intended for a theater, a film or television scenario. Normally it includes characters and scenarios, in situations that occur in front of the viewer without being mediated by a narrator.

• Trial. The essay consists of the reflexive and explanatory approach to any subject, through an exercise in subjective argument that seeks to offer views of view or unpublished perspectives.
