Importance of teamwork in nursing
Nurses play a vital role in medical care;Registered nurses include the largest medical care occupation. Only in Ecuador there are a little more than 7.225 active nurses, according to the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador.
Nurses offer education and information to patients and their families, and provide emotional support to those who need it. Other responsibilities include performing medical tests, analyzing results and helping with patient rehabilitation. Few patients see a single nurse or medical care provider, so it is particularly important that nursing care professionals develop strong teamwork skills.
Communication inappropriate teamwork as one of the factors that affect infant mortality rates. Teamwork failures can also have devastating effects on the environment of an emergency room, since the lack of information or cooperation can cause nursing errors. On the contrary, teamwork can lead to more positive results for patients, thanks to more reasoned decisions developed through a greater exchange of information and less errors made due to lack of information.
Importance of communication
Teamwork in nursing care contributes directly to a more effective communication. Nurses communicate with each other to compare general notes, discuss new information about the modified health status of a patient and write down the changes made in the patient’s medical care plan, such as recipes, diet changes or planned surgeries. Nursing care also implies communication with other health professionals, including doctors, speech therapists or respiratory therapists. Working as a team implies sharing knowledge, observations and concerns with relevant medical suppliers to make patient care settings.

Maintaining a solid teamwork environment in nursing care can improve the knowledge of colleagues. Working together, nurses can transmit new strategies, techniques or information on particular diagnoses. This increases the general knowledge of the team, since nurses can have different background of training and experience.
Nurses with more experience can also help the newer professionals or those who are in transition to the workplace from another. In addition, teamwork allows nursing colleagues to become more familiar with the professional strengths and weaknesses of others. When assigning patients, a chief nurse can assign a child patient to a nurse with significant experience or personal skills to work with children, or assign a cardiac patient to nurses who have just completed specialized training in innovative heart care.
Work satisfaction
Promoting teamwork in nursing care can also increase the job satisfaction of those involved. Environments that lack a teamwork mentality can become competition, small disputes or frustrations, and it is perceived that employees are not doing everything possible. Teamwork can promote greater motivation and the will to provide support during stressful or emergency medical care situations.
Auto government
A solid teamwork ethics in nursing care can improve the self-government. Nursing departments that are not divided into frequent disputes between employees and do not make avoidable mistakes, but that produce quality care in a constant way, are more likely to have some autonomy and self-government within the hospital or the medical care environment.
