HW/SW resources from my computer

Introduction

In this work I will address the main characteristics of my team, both at the hardware and software level, I must say that I will use a desktop equipment, specifically that of my work, since with this team it is with which I spend more time day by day, It is not especially powerful so we can review somewhat obsolete but at the same time interesting hardware characteristics.

We will address the information of both a scientific and user point of view and try to provide our personal value, we begin!

Analysis of my team components

General characteristics:

First we will focus on the general characteristics, I will indicate that my team is an HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF I3, having an Intel Core i3 processor, with HP Compaq la1951G monitor, QWERTY LENOVO KEYBOOK and LYNX M9.

(In the photo you can also see a Switch D-Link and a ThinkCentre SSD miniord but I will focus on the HP)

The HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF I3 (Small Form Factor) is, or rather it was a professional range computer, it went on the market with a much higher price than a medium domestic computer and did not used to be marketed through the typical sales channels to user. It has a black chassis whose main characteristic, as in most desktops, is the ease of removing their side covers and thus obtaining a simple access to equipment components in order to remove them in case of damage or update them If we wanted to.

It has USB ports both on the front of the chassis and in the rear (being always, according to my experience, those of the rear more powerful and being these where we must connect any device that the equipment did not recognize us in the USB ports of the front of)

It also has a DVD reader-speaker (something in extinction) and two mini jack connectors for helmets and micro on the front of the box.

In the back we have the following:

  • 4 USB 3 ports.0 (faster than 2.0 so common at that time).
  • 2 USB 2 ports.0.
  • 2 PS/2 ports for possible keyboard keyboard and mouse PS/2 (something already quite outdated, most keyboards and mice go for USB).
  • 1 port com RS-232 series (also in an outdated per).
  • 1 atrial jack and 1 microphone jack.
  • 1 Boca RJ-45 Ethernet Network.

The team has an Intel® Q77 Express chipset (where the Intel Core i3 microprocessor is housed)

The processor indicated above is an Intel® Core ™ I3- processor 3.3 GHz Base Frequency, 3 MB Cache, 2 nuclei, 4 threads, (at the time it was powerful right now where most teams are i5 or i7 somewhat short base frequency falls and is much slower to perform the tasks).

Its power supply is not ATX (so we cannot control the energy consumption of the equipment or put it in standby, which in these days is an important backwardness).

The recommended uses for this equipment are:

  • Execute office applications
  • Multimedia contents such as videos and photos (in modest version, does not carry a graph suitable for gaming or powerful video editing programs)
  • Navigate in Internet.
  • Voice chat and possibility of adding a webcam.
  • General multitasking.
  • Non -demanding games provided there is not much graphics processing).

So for the administrative and remote support work that we do at work is enough, it is true that we should have more powerful equipment, because many times we use the virtualbox oracle and here when we load a virtual machine yes it shows their own slowness of a machine with limited resources.

Once the general characteristics are mentioned, we will move on a more detailed description of the equipment hardware and software components.

Hardware characteristics:

When we have this equipment to have the Windows 7 operating system, we will use the MSINFO32 command from the option to run to indicate in a more detailed way the hardware and characteristics that the machine has:

Main components:

  • CPU: As the MSINFO32 command has not indicated, the processor is an Intel® Core ™ I3- processor
  • 3.3 GHz Base Frequency, describes at what speed transistors open and close. The frequency is measured in Giga Hertzios (GHZ) or one billion cycles per second. Colloquially indicates the speed with which it will perform the relevant actions that we indicate or a program.
  • 3 MB Cache, is the fast memory part located in the processor. Allows all nuclei dynamically share access to high -level cache. Colloquially it is an intermediate memory that keeps certain resources to avoid having to access them again every time it is invoked, it allows more processing speed.
  • 2 nuclei, number of independent processing units, for how we have studied in this lesson to make parallel computing.
  • 4 threads, elements that allow us at the software level perform multihil.
  • Bus speed, speed at which information is transferred between the components of the 5GT/S equipment.

In short, it is a micro to work with office applications, it does not have great performance, in fact many times with Cytrix and other applications to connect to remote equipment is very slow.

RAM: It is the volatile memory where programs and data are loaded, in which reading and writing operations are carried out, in this case it has a capacity of 4 GB and is of the DIMM type (indicates the type of connector or slot of the plate base where the memory module will be inserted).

DDR3-1600: This feature indicates the possibility of data transfers (1600 million data per second, double channel, each 800MHz) is faster than a DDR2 memory and especially with those that are not DDR, yes, yes, yes, yes, It has a disadvantage, access latency is proportionally higher.

PC3-12800: It indicates that it has 12 800 MB/s of maximum transfer capacity.

In summary, the amount of memory, as well as its transfer rate and process speed is, today, quite meager, since it is a professional work team where we have to use server connection tools and carry out several processes to the time. It would be more convenient for a more modern team with 16 GB of RAM DDR4.

Cache memory: The microprocessor has, as indicated above, 3 MB of cache level 2 (this type of cache first verifies if the processor is busy to send instructions), the hard drive has 8Mb of cache. These values are quite low compared to those used today.

  • BASE PLATE: It has a plate 656933-001 for Intel Q77 Express that as previously commented, it has the following characteristics:
  • Front ports: 4x USB 2.0, 1x headphones and 1x jack microphone
  • Rear ports: 4x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0, 2x ps/2, 1x vga monitor, 1x Display Port, 1x RS-232 series, 1x headphones and 1x jack microphone, 1x RJ-45 Ethernet network.
  • Expansion slots: 1x PCI, 1x PCI Express X1, 2x PCI Express X16
  • WIFI: You have no possibility to add Wifi PCI card
  • It doesn’t have Buetooth but you can add bluetooth card

Video and sound cards:

Video card, has a generation architecture graphics 6.0 and 32 Nm technology developed especially for office, is connected through the PCIE 1 interface.0 x16.

It provides low performance in games and in many applications, it is a graph for office and little more.

Sound card, has internal speaker alc261, very basic sound, not recommended for cinema, movies or games.

Other components of the computer:

TFT HP Compaq La1951G monitor of 19 -inch Native Resolution. 1280 x 1024. Brightness. 250 cd/m. Contrast ratio. 1000: 1 static. Response rate. 5 ms. Vision angle. It is a monitor that is not bad size and allows you to work with several applications at the same time in a comfortable way.

500GB SATA hard drive at 7200 rpm, particularly it seems to me a small amount of storage when many work teams have SSD hard drives and if not, the capacity of a professional hard drive is around 1 to 2 TB, many times Combining both Hard Disk types.

DVD reader/recorder: something that a given time can be useful to watch movies or make not very heavy backs, but that is already practically missing from professional computer science shops because we have pendrives, memory cards and other devices with a lot of capacity that do not need specific hardware and are much lighter and more transportable.

Software characteristics:

  • Operating System/S (SO): The equipment has the Windows 7 Professional Operating System with Service Pack 1 (Packing Package to increase capabilities and fix failures of different kinds that have been found in the operating system) is the 32 version of 32 bits (now almost all teams are 64 to manage RAM more than 4 GB).

Windows 7 is not a bad operating system, together with XP and 10, according to me criteria are the best, but in the middle of 2020 we should have Windows 10 equipment for its virtual desks etc.

The team has a single partition C :, where is the entire space related to the hard drive, it also has 3 network mapping units to servers.

As an antivirus, being a corporate team, there is a trend-micro perimeter antivirus. Antivirus that continuously controls the equipment and network of the company.

  • Management and Server Applications: When working with remote equipment we have several remote connection applications, such as VNC and NTRSUPPORT (the latter will cease to exist on June 30), also to have to support different types of machines by What we have of the virtualbox Oracle VM, with images of Windows XP to 10, Macos, and Linux Debian and SUSE. These virtual machine. We also use the remote desktop application that is included with Windows 7 professional as an alternative to VNC etc. Regarding server this equipment does not work as such, but connects to different servers mapping units, with remote desktop, VNC, Putty (software to connect remotely in console mode) and other connection software.

Conclusions:

Throughout the work I have indicated that the characteristics of the equipment are very basic, practically the essentials today to work with office programs, but far removed in the optimal needs referred to virtualization, connection and work in remote, multimedia etc. So for our work, this team is far behind what we would need for the correct performance of our work functions.

This article indicates examples of average computer for office user work, are quite higher than those belonging to our machine and that our team is supposed to be oriented to professional computer support work, which comes to corroborate the above throughout This writing and especially in the conclusions section.
