The two are the standard modes of classification of coding systems of the medical sector internationally. However, the ICD has other divisions which are of three major types; the ICD-10-CM, the ICD-10-PCS, and the ICD-9 systems. The coding systems are used by the medical practitioners to determine the extent of a disease’s necessity. In using these coding systems, the diseases urgency is also determined so as to address how one should be treated every time, (Buck, 2016). The CPT codes are used by the AMA organization and are 00100-99499 which shows that they are alphanumeric and five in digits. The CPT is used mainly by the USA and other countries which are obviously not as many as the ones using the ICD. The CPT codes are employed in the identification of services such as; operative, checkup, symptomatic, and radiology. On the other hand, the ICD system is used in alphanumerical codes of 3-5-digits. This system is employed by a century of countries and functions a lot in the addressing of a medical condition in terms of the degrees that it has. Both the two coding systems were developed by the WHO which keeps a record of them and updates them where necessary. The ICD-10 system is able to indicate the severity of a medical condition which makes it advantageous in the diagnosis processes, (Beik, 2013). The ICD-10-PCS and the ICD-10-CM differ in the sense that the former deals with medical procedures while the latter deals with the clinical modification sectors.
