AB. How is this appropriation of the Bogota language of youth and the gay world?
ASB. The management of Islam, everyday language and slang? I don’t know … I guess it’s natural, because I speak like this. When writing, like Cortázar, I use all the jargon that I know, and when I talk about jarss, I mean the Caribbean, coastal jargon, of which I am a product, and in that I am quite profuse in the novel. An anecdote: Edwin Rodríguez has an email in the novel and receives mail normally, and Edwin answers it, no Alonso Sánchez. Well, this morning I received an email from a Spaniard who had just read the novel and liked him a lot, but I didn’t understand many words. This reader wanted me to explain them. He wrote to me a long list of all the words that I did not understand, and they all belonged to my coastal jargon: "Corroncho", "Mañe", "Camajo", "Chiflando iguanas", "Majanpoluo", all of her are part of my genetics. AB. Now, speaking of the novel, how does the title arise?
ASB. Well there is a long list of all the titles that the novel had before reaching the final. Many titles I liked much more, but "the Diablo La Cursa Primavera" was finally the one who won the personal "test". The title leaves the story itself: Edwin Rodríguez is a person who is looking for love all the time, the novel is basically about that, it is not a novel about homosexuality in Bogotá or about "Dragquinism". It is a novel about the search for affection and on the insistence of loneliness. There is an Edwin all the time you are looking for a couple who to be. In the end, after all these tragedies that happen to him, he does not find it. It is something like saying to the devil love, I am no longer interested in love, I will not worry anymore for that. It is a commanded to the shit of love. At the same time it is a tribute to a Yuri song from the 1980s -"The damn spring" -, which is somehow the anthem of homosexuals in Bogotá.
AB. Criticism knows very well why the novel was so successful, but you. Why do you think she had it?
ASB. I think there is a cluster of circumstances. There is not a single thing that I could tell you. For example, the issue, which is somehow novel in this country. But still the novel is successful in Spain and Spain is a country that has a lot of homosexual literary movement. Second, I could say that because he won an award, the only National Novel Prize in Colombia. But at the same time there are those who tell me that before me they did not know that contest. I have always thought that the novel has had a series of very important guarantees. First he won the prize;second, it turns out that within the jury of the award was r.H. Moreno Durán, who is one of the most respected writers in this country. That was a very big guarantee and from there all criticism began to come out that were giving up to the novel. The last to appear as a great endorsement was Jorge there Trian. Now, what is novel is language. Another thing is that the novel has a lot of humor. The protagonist is a person who mocks himself all the time, who is very critical of heterosexual society, but who is much more critical of homosexual society. This has also liked it because at no time I wrote a pamphlet or victimized the protagonist: there are neither bad nor good nor good.
AB. Alonso, any opinion about the new writers who narrate the current Bogotá?
ASB. I celebrate a lot that there is a kind of "boom" of Colombian literature, that there are many people writing, and writing well, and that they are also publishing. There is a fairly wide generation where internationally recognized authors are included, such as Santiago Gamboa and Jorge Franco, but also young people who are emerging, such as Antonio Ungar and Carolina Sanín. They are young people of twenty years who are publishing for the first time. To me, that seems supremely valid because there are more and more people who get involved with literature. I have read almost everyone, there are some that I like much more than others, for some reason. I really like Toño García’s humor, for example. Sergio Álvarez must also be mentioned, because he is a writer without any intellectual possess.
