History of Education Eurocup
Introduction
This is the most important selection tournament in Europe and is organized by UEFA every four years since 1960. In the following article we will tell you the history of the Euro Cup, its greatest winners and more than interesting data on this competition. Although the first Euro Cup was played in 1960, already in 1927 there was talk of organizing a tournament between the European soccer teams, as was the case in South America with the Copa América.
Why did we have to wait so much for it to be carried out? Basically because some European federations did not agree and because it was a bit difficult to organize the meetings in postwar period.
Developing
In 1957 the UEFA Congress (entity that had been founded three years earlier) announced the idea of a continental competition. This was how the first time the Eurocup was organized – with the name of the European Cup of Nations – was in 1960, a complicated event to ensure that all the selections were part. And so it was, because England, Federal Germany and Italy did not participate. The game system was as follows: eliminatory matches until four were left, which would dispute the final phase.
The final was held in France and had as the protagonist Soviet and Yugolsavos. The former won 2 to 1 in the extension after drawing 1 to 1 in the 90 minutes regulatory. Four years later a new Eurocup is organized, with a final headquarters in Spain. The Spaniards were the victors against the defenders of the title, in a match at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid. The third place went to Hungary and the fourth for Denmark.
Name and third edition change
In 1968 the third edition was organized, with Italy as host. In that year it is decided to change the name to European Nations Championship and adopt a new format: qualification groups. The winner was the organizer, second Yugoslavia, third England and fourth the Soviet Union. The winners of the following editions were Federal Germany and Czechoslovakia.
Since the 1980 edition, the Eurocup went on to have eight participating selections. In that year the winner was Federal Germany. In 1984, France was victorious and in 1988 the Netherlands. The 1992 edition was a great change for competition, since it was renamed Eurocup, as we currently know it. That year the winner was Denmark.
In 1996 the tournament increased its number of participants to 16 and the winner was Germany. In the 2000 edition there were two hosts: Germany and the Netherlands;The winner was France. The next edition was won by the Greeks and in 2008 again there was an organizing pair (Austria and Switzerland). The winner was Spain, who repeated the feat in 2012 (Cup organized by Poland and Ukraine). The last edition of 2016 was won by Portugal, the first time in history that the Plusters take the Eurocup.
Eurocup statistics and records
Until now Germany and Spain are the top winners of the Eurocup with three titles each. The first in 1972, 1980 and 1996 and the second in 1964, 2008 and 2012. France has two glasses: 1984 and 2000. As for representations, Germany has been present in 12 editions, Russia in 11 and Spain in 10. With 9 present are France, Italy, the Netherlands, Czech Republic and England.
The historical scorers table is led by Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, with 29 goals from his debut in the 2004 edition;Second is the Swedish Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with 25 (he also played for the first time) and in third place the Irish Robbie Keane, who in just two editions converted 23 goals.
