Goya’s work La Lechera de Bordeaux

Goya is the graphic reporter of the time, thanks to him we know what Carlos IV, Fernando VII, the Spanish people, the battles that Spanish and French faced;with whom but we were going to know the customs of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. With it, pictographic techniques such as spots -based painting have been known. Your paintings must be seen from afar because you can hardly distinguish anything. Seeing them from afar it seems that he paints all the details.

Goya painted all kinds of themes: costumbristas, portraits, courtiers, landscapes; But, above all, they will highlight the paintings where he expresses his interior. I am deaf, that torments him all his life and leads him to create important works, they are the so -called ‘black paintings’, where he reflects all the worst of the human being. In the last years of his life, he painted the works known as the black paintings, some of which are simply mysterious and others look like the artist explores the secrets of his mind and the doubts that all invade us. This last part of his work has been considered an antecedent of expressionism and surrealism of the century; In the same way, works such as the dairy of Bordeaux, already made in exile, or her fresco paintings of the hermitage of San Antonio de la Florida, have given rise to some critics to treat him as a precursor to impressionism, the truth is thatGoya’s work had great influence on French painting at the end of the 19th century.

A year before he died he had painted the dairy of Bordeaux, 1827, which is located in the Prado Museum, a key work in the history of painting that anticipates impressionism. Goya did not leave immediate artistic heirs, but his influence was crucial in the engravings and painting in the mid -nineteenth century and in the art of the twentieth century.

The work of Bordeaux milk who was completed before he died according to his biography says that “the second restoration and persecution of the liberals pushed a volunteer exile in France, where he would die but not before he pictorially outlined a smile, an ironic ironic last tributeto the belief in a happy future for man, in a gender work like the dairy of Bordeaux (1828).”(Biographies and lives) being that work not those of the darkness that represented him in previous years or stages, but he deals with this work to use some light, color, simplicity and emotion. It is a humble woman and who practiced the milkmaid trade, the dress is very simple, a shirt, a skirt, a apron a light jacket on the shirt and no lace, embroidery or ornaments are seen. The class difference at that time was a lot and, being poor, they could not stay at home all the time, that was one of the works of poor women of the time or if widow the woman took the position of the man. In the painting we know that she is not a high -class woman, because of the clothing she wears, rather she is a humble woman; The indication of her profession is not seen either, just by the name of the painting. Milk is not mounted in a donkey and neither are you seen singing full or carving the milk. It is seen in the picture that she is in a relaxed position, her gaze is calm and if she looks to the left of the painting, a perhaps milk with milk is seen and the Goya subject.

Goya lived at a time when the social difference was quite clear, high -society women dressed in more elaborate clothes, with lace and more variety of colors. As the woman of this Goya painting the use two colored tones and the suit that the woman uses is simple according to the title of the picture. Since it is linked to the profession of the time that was the milkmaid. “This is a portrait of a female figure, spontaneously, constituting a gender painting framed in the tradition of trades paintings that were carried out since the mid -seventeenth century. It has no landscape, the background is simple. It is a fairly simple work.”(Unpocodearteparaclase.com).

There is a lot of talk about the milkman according to Wikipedia “they have hidden the hands of the milkmaid; When it is proverbial that Goya was a teacher painting his hands;although it is no less true that he sometimes hid them, perhaps because of work economy or for presuming that the portrayed did not deserve it." (it is.Wikipedia.org). This comment from Wikipedia caught my attention because if in other of his paintings it was clear that he could perfectly draw her hands, but decided to take them out, in this case it can be for many reasons, but in my particular opinion I think that he did not wantlook at the physical composition of the person rather in the soul of the character or that we felt what she represented for him. Goya for being a relevant artist inspiring the artists of the avant -garde of the twentieth century, also at the end of his life he was looking for new painting techniques.

Thus being his paintings were an advance in his time, being the inspiration for artists of the next generation. His success is that he knew how to capture the society of the moment, knew how. Because it is his last work, Bordeaux’s milkmaid is the one who does Goya and his technique of painting and originality not that of the most famous works, but I leave everyone an illusion or a smile of hope for humanity.
