Glyphosate: The ineffective government proposal

Glyphosate is a substance present in the most used herbicides in the world, it is used in the control of weeds, pastures and gardens, however, its effect on plants is not selective, that is, it will affect everything that is equallyApply, its use has been increasing since drug crops in Colombia grew by more than 60% since 2016. I must add that this poison has been the cause of debates in the government, since it has been argued that glyphosate spray is the most effective, this can affect 150 crops in one day, compared to manual eradication that does not pass 3 plantations.

Glyphosate may seem like a viable option to eradicate drug crops, however, there is scientific evidence that warns that glyphosate is a herbicide that negatively affects the biodiversity of water and soil, in the case of the soil, it has been shown that it promotes theTraining of harmful pathogens and causes of the loss of vitamins for the growth of new plants, as if that were not enough, weakens the immune system of insects, which causes the death of pollinators such as bees. Refluents and aquatic biodiversity are not alien to their consequences, when the fish interact with glyphosate, they are more vulnerable to parasites and also, the microorganisms of which they feed die, which unbalance the rest of the ecosystem.

Human health is affected, every year diseases such as: skin disorders, alzheimerharmful effects is also illogical, unusual, ”is the response of the doctor Laura Rodríguez, an expert in epidemiology and professor at the University of Santander.

In other words, sprinkles with glyphosate in Colombia are not a guarantee to end drug trafficking, but it is certain that it entails environmental damage and deterioration in the health of the Colombian population.

It is demonstrated, the use of glyphosate in Colombia is an ineffective and harmful strategy against illicit crops and drug trafficking. In contrast, more than 17 countries in the last decade have promoted an insurance environment in their fields, so they concluded that glyphosate is the last herbicide that should be used.

In European countries such as Austria, glyphosate has been prohibited for its carcinogenic effects, in France, glyphosate products have been withdrawn from the market by more friendly to the environment and will be totally prohibited in 5 years, in Mexico it has begun to restrict theGlifosate gradually since it was found that the waterchard where important underground waters for the development of new crops accumulate. It seems that Colombia is the only country in the world that uses glyphosate as an eradication tool.

As we have seen, glyphosate is not any herbicide, its use must be reconsidered in the not too distant and replaced by ecologically sustainable alternatives, it will be crucial that the Colombian government study other ways to end illicit crops, for example that ofUsing strategies such as the properties entitled, where each one is responsible for what is sown, in addition, Colombia could begin the remedy of legal crops that will bring less violence and more progress to the country.
