Genetic manipulation and ethics

According to the Pan -Hispanic Dictionary of Legal Spanish (DPEJ), genetic manipulation is the practice of techniques aimed at modifying the hereditary flow of some species, for variable purposes, from overcoming diseases of genetic origin (genetic therapy) or experimental purpose (get an individual with characteristics not existing until that moment).

In Spain, sex or genetic manipulation is considered very serious infraction for unauthorized non -therapy or therapeutic purposes. Law 14/2006, of May 26, on assisted human reproduction techniques, art. 26.two. c).

The practice of genetic manipulation in its broadest sense has been running from 8000 to.C. approximately, and within the knowledge about the subject that could be at that time. However, to locate the birth of discipline as such, there is no generalized theoretical, authors such as Teresa Palomeque Messía place it around 1900, with the rediscovery of Mendel’s experiments, made by De Vries, Correns and Von Tscherk. Other authors do not consider that the first genetic engineering experiment is finished successfully, which took place in 1973, when the first recombinant DNA molecule is created, that is, that the genes of one species are introduced into another,And they work properly.

So far, these are the advances that genetics has made in less than 100 years of research, according to Javier Gafo, Professor of Moral Theology and director of the Chair and Master of Bioethics at the University of Comillas:

  • DNA-based biotechnology.
  • Dissemination of genetically modified microorganisms to the environment.
  • The application to higher organisms
  • Use in the human species
  • The Human Genome Project.

However, the aspirations of this discipline are much greater and all the fields in which these advances could be put into practice cause, in turn, a debate in society, are these ethical experiments?

The scientific journal Nature Biotechnology published three years ago the results of a survey in which the population of various countries about genome manipulation was asked. Volunteers were asked about two different uses of genetic manipulation: as a therapeutic tool and as a tool to improve human abilities. Almost 12.000 people from Germany, Austria, Denmark, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, United Kingdom, the United States and Spain, responded to the questionnaire.

The survey results showed that 75% of respondents are positioned in favor of genetic edition if their purpose is to treat diseases. The prior manipulation of birth showed an acceptance of 60%. And the use of genetic manipulation in order to improve human capacities showed much lower acceptance.

The results of the previous survey show that when we consider the validity of genetic manipulation, we do not look so much in whether the application of technology is good or not, but in whether the end of its application is moral or is not.

conclusion

Genetic manipulation can be something very good or something very bad for society. Many people are against, either by religion or for fear of accepting a change. But in reality, genetic manipulation could bring us many benefits such as the improvement of diseases, greater production and nutrients in food, among others. You can do great things with genetic manipulation, the important thing is to know their risks, think ethically and use it moderately.
