Freud and his study against hysteria

Freud, during his study, did not show great importance, as the sessions went through a case with great importance for the theory of hysteria. Although it did not have the usual signs of neurosis, but Freud considered it as a case of hysteria; The patient suffered from intense leg pains, which caused her to walk well; Freud considered that the cause was that his family had gone through several misfortunes in recent years.

The first Freud session I notice that the patient; She who was 24 years old; She was psychically normal, she had a cheerful spirit despite her suffering from her, she overcome him with the "beautiful indifference" of the hysterics.

The pains that the patient presented were 2 years ago, of a variable intensity; When the part of the ailment was pinched she presented an expression more of pleasure than pain; She presented a repression of excitation. Freud said that the patient was aware of the reasons for suffering from her, therefore, it was obvious that it was something she wanted to keep a secret. After investigating his family environment a little, he found that he was the best of three daughters, apart from the fact that he had a tender attachment to her parents, the mother suffered from eye ailments, because of this issue the patient attached very closely to her father ; We noticed that given this she began to demonstrate some rejection of her mother and the younger sisters of her, thus causing discussions between them because of their character.

After some sessions we discovered that her father became ill, presenting the pain of the legs for the first time, but only appeared once and as a slight discomfort; concluding in this way that he was not serious and giving him little importance. With the passage of time the patient tells us that both of her sisters marry, but she has a disagreement with her first sister’s marriage; Since she for that marriage she had to leave her place of origin and caused her mother’s greater loneliness. The patient had a better acceptance for her second sister’s marriage, which she died after her second pregnancy. We can conclude so far that she was a girl in need of love, that she was bitter by the various failures that her plans to restore things in her house from the loss of her father and her sister; since she did not have the support of a man she wanted, since she lived in her mother’s care for her constant pain.

But for Freud all this information did not present a cause, nor the determination (determinierung) of the hysteria that existed in the patient. Freud tried the hypnosis method which did not work, since the patient did not relax at any time; given to this; Another method was attempted, which consisted of convening by pressure on the head images and occurrences, this method is inapplicable without full collaboration and if the patient’s voluntary care. Thanks to this method several scenes were reproduced, with which a resistance to refer to them was observed; This was given to increase his pain by remembering these scenes. After some time through this method it was discovered that the patient had a tender inclination towards the husband of her second sister, such a feeling created an opposite within her conscience; For this issue, an uncertainty was saved that she loved her sister’s husband creating muscle aches.

For this reason the patient had a resistance to the reproduction of traumatic efficacy scenes, which was created outside the association of the corresponding feelings; which she hid behind a mask of some condition towards a relative; which was understandable to her. We can see that within what the patient can do if she had hysterical symptoms such as: ambition, moral fineness, enormous need for love, the independence of nature, among others. Apart from the end that she evicts the erotic representation of her consciousness, turning her need for her effect on muscle pains.

Personally I believe that one of the first conflicts he had with her, was that at the time it was 1862, society had an expectation for women; which was to marry and have children, also her parents had those expectations, which she did not want to meet, so she was unhappy being a woman. For that same reason when finding and talking with a man, like her sister’s husband, she begins the longing for getting someone like him; She unconsciously begins to love him as something else just a brother -in -law. Causing a conflict between it and the super me; which she finished when suppressing those feelings, but starting with the pain. Being in her last session, she decided to finish her before since, according to her, she listens to the voice of her brother -in -law asking about her, which was not true; In a way, I believe that the therapy fulfilled what was expected, since, when taking out those feelings and accepting them, the muscular pain of it disappeared.

In the sense of the therapy used, regarding my point of view, I think it was an choice, since I do not believe that I could have operated with another; since what the patient had was a defense mechanism, repression, which had been explained by Freud; Apart from that a regression was necessary; Not so far; to obtain the real reason of her hysteria and her muscle ailments; Although I think the results were not expected, since the corresponding follow -up could not be given.
