Essay on Socrates’ thought

 Socrates begins by talking to the Athenians; Comment on the falsehoods that have been said about him, emphasizing a (accusation) which caused great strangeness. The one that said that they should be expected to be deceived by him (by Socrates) due to his "ease of speaking".

To which Socrates argues that he limits himself to telling the truth and that if he is considered skilled to speak then he was considered like this.

He explains that he is going to tell the whole truth, yes, without taking too much care of the form but if the content and, in addition, he was going to use the expressions he has always used (he will not change the speech because of that, since he His age had never been accused in a trial and did not know but words use).

In summary, they ask the Athenians not to look at the ways of expressing themselves but in whether it tells the truth or not.

This is where the arguments really begin, Socrates begins his argument (let’s call it pre-defense, since it is before starting to defend himself) dividing the accusers of him into two groups:

  • The first accusers
  • The last accusers
  • The first accusers: those who have long accused him before the people of Athens when:

 

  • These (the Athenians, that the vast major
  • Socrates was not ahead.

 

The last accusers: those who have recently accused him, or those who have been convinced by the first accusers and now try to convince others.

And here is where the defense really begins, when he tries to refute the legal accusation of the first accusers who said:

Socrates commits crime and gets into what he should not investigate underground and celestial things, by making the weakest argument stronger and by teaching these same things to others.

To exculpate this accusation he makes two refutations:

  • The first presenting as witnesses to most of the people who were in the trial, and asking them to inform each other of whether any of them had heard him talk about these issues.
  • The second refutation does it by denying that he charged money to educate men since:
  • He was not a sophist (they used to do it)
  • He could presume if he knew so much and to train a person but he argues that he doesn’t know those things.

 

But one might ask that if he did nothing out of the ordinary and did not stand out, he would not have had such reputation then, where were such misrepresentations born? Why? What have you done?

To which he responds that it is due to some wisdom, perhaps, the man’s own. And he explains one of the most powerful reasons why he earned so many enmity.

He comments that an old friend named Queretfonte (already deceased) asked the oracle if there was someone more wise than Socrates and the oracle replied that no one was wise.

(Being a trial there had to be witnesses for what testimony was the brother of Querefonte)

So Socrates after thinking about it a lot began to investigate. He thought that if he found someone wiser that he would be wrong.

He went to a person who seemed to be wise but realized that he was not thinking that he knew everything about all the issues. Socrates tried to make him understand that he was not a wise man, moreover, he showed him for what he won an enmity, and thus with a set of sages (politicians) so he won a great set of enemies.

Then it seemed to him that others who seemed lower were better endowed by what he headed for the poets and obtained the same result (the poets did not do what they did by wisdom but for a special ability contrasted with a moment of inspiration).

Seeing that the poets did not respond to their requirements, they headed towards the artisans and, yes, they did things that he did not know how He watched his wisdom. He concluded that he was well as he was.

Even on the day of his death, Socrates did not consider him as a calamity, when his companions were worried about his soul, Socrates had also reasoned about what would happen to him when he separated from his body which did not fright but contrary to him He was glad, and he remembered that passage from the Odyssey where Homer said that: Ulisea hitting the chest, I encourage his heart with these words "Soportal my heart, more difficult things you have supported now", and it is its end with his death .
