Emotional and physical abuse in the elderly

Introduction.

The abuse of elders has been present in society since past times. Evidence of the abuse of elders in writings can be found. Despite its constant presence over time, only serious attention has been given to the violence of the elderly. The main reason for the new recognition of this old problem is the growing number of people who age. The abuse of elders today is more frequent than in past times, because few people deal with the needs of their elders.

In past generations, the duties of caring for the elderly were shared among the members of large families. However, due to the emergence of a tense economy and smaller family nuclei, there are less time and family members to take care of the elderly within each family. The definition of nursing home varies from country in country. A common average term in all definitions is that the abuse of the elderly is any physical and psychological abuse towards an elderly person.

In short, it is the violation of the rights of the elder to adequate security and medical care. Due to the various definitions of elderly abuse in all areas, the act has been categorized in different classes. Physical abuse, verbal / psychological abuse and financial abuse are three main types of elder abuse.

Developing.

The physical abuse of the elderly can include restriction, slaps, blows, bruises and other forms of physical abuse that cause pain or injuries, sexual abuse, sexual abuse and rape. Verbal abuse or psychological abuse generally involves inflicting mental anguish, humiliation, intimidation, screams and threats. Keeping an eldest person isolated from others can also cause psychological anguish and cause more serious problems such as depression.

While taking care of the elderly, most caregivers tend to exploit and use the funds of their patients illegally or inappropriate; This denotes financial abuse. Theft, fraud and use of an older person with mental disabilities, for profit or personal gain also constitute financial abuse.

The most common and painful abuse for most elderly is marital abuse. Marital abuse can occur throughout adult life. For older people who report physical abuse by a spouse, abuse has probably occurred for many years throughout the relationship and continues to old age. For others, conjugal abuse can occur with a significant change in life that sometimes accompanies the advanced age, such as the mental or physical illness of a spouse. In addition, other forms of domestic violence, including family relationships with life couples, adult children and grandchildren, have caused the abuse of the elderly.

Refusing or not fulfilling care obligations, abandoning an older person or denying food or health services are forms of negligence. Another type of negligence is your own negligence. This may include not carrying out activities of daily life that the old man is physically capable of doing. For example, this may include not eating, bathing and taking medications, or looking for the necessary health services. Negligence and personal abandonment may be due to intentional acts with the conscious attempt to inflict pain and suffering or can be involuntary due to ignorance, disease or laziness of the responsible person.

Causes and prevention of the abuse of elders:

As you know, the abuse of elders is an extremely common and difficult problem. There are several notions regarding the cause of the abuse of elders. These factors are usually the one of the other and, as such, do not operate independently, but rather with each other. However, this depends on the situation of the victim and the causes.

Caring for a sick old man who can suffer from mental or physical impediment can be very stressful. Special training and skills are needed to succeed in such tasks. Most caregivers do not have this training and skills to do attention, so they are stressed and frustrated regardless of whether the old man is a loved one. The lack of skills, combined with stress, can lead to the abuse and negligence of the elderly.

conclusion.

Being treated as invalid is not a cozy feeling for most elders; Therefore, the elderly who have always been independent throughout their lives can become resentful, rude and not very cooperative with their caregivers. This can cause abuse, especially if the elderly are in poor health conditions and depend financially on their caregivers.

Fighting with the elderly ailments and their dependence can be very stressful if it is done full time. The situation can be tense when external tensions are added, as financial, labor and additional issues. According to studies, the result of all these stressful factors will cause abuse, since there is a clear relationship between stress and abuse.
