Corporate Social Responsibility Proposal of the Yanacocha Minera in Cajamarca
Currently, companies are no longer seen as simple profit -producing entities for some, work for others and taxes for the State. Today, companies are organizations of and for development, so in recent years the concept of social responsibility, especially in the business field, has been gaining great importance and surely the conception of it has evolved;The interest in elements such as: communities, workers and business competitiveness powerfully draws attention to those who guide their professional work in social fields in the results that can generate the relationships and interactions between these elements. This has caused, throughout the world, and therefore in our own country that has been significantly advanced in the development of corporate social responsibility. According to a report by the magazine, there is a progressive adoption and consolidation of CSR policies and sustainability by Peruvian businessmen. Therefore, CSR is occupying a place of priority in companies, benefiting both companies and society, since "it is a commitment that companies assume for the well -being of the social environment that surrounds them";In addition to improving the quality of life of society, they help preserve the environment. In the Cajamarca region there has been an economic growth driven by mining, which began in 1993, with the Yanacocha mining company, however, it has also been a reason for social conflicts in which it has been questioned if it should continueuse of mining in the region. In Latin America, the Yanacocha company is one of the most representative, however, not the entire region knows about the activities of responsibility it performs, especially in the policies of impact prevention and mitigation, which is one of theissues of which society, for ignorance or ignorance, criticizes and attacks. Article 132 of Legislative Decree No. 109 states that “the holders of mining activities are taxed with taxes: the fee, the income tax, the tax on the goods and services while the general tax is in force, the general tax on theSales, as long as taxed operations are carried out with said tax [..] Consequently, the aforementioned holders of mining activities are exonerated from any other tribute. This exoneration refers exclusively to mining activity and is applied both to the person who leads to mining activity and the concession and the products obtained from it ”. The mining company in the policies and principles assure that they have respect for current regulations, as well as human rights, contributing to society the security that will be responsible for complying with each and every one of the items in the General Mining Law, as well as in other current regulations that apply to it, so that the mining company is obliged to create policies to prevent and mitigate impacts, especially environmental, which is the largest concern of the population. In the health section of your CSR proposal, La Minera aims to focus its attention on issues that contribute to improving the health of the residents of their area of influence. Carrying out different activities, including preventive health care campaigns, with the participation of the Ministry of Health.
Yanacocha acts with integrity, trust and respect, seeking profitable but at the same time responsible and generating sustainable development in the region. As part of the social responsibility he performs, there are policies and principles as the first section, which gives value both to the company and society. Yanacocha is governed by key principles such as ethics, transparency and respect, prevention and mitigation of impacts, contribution to social and economic development, respect for current regulations and human rights, preservation of environmental resources and cultural diversity.

With the aim of contributing to improving the company’s relations with the community, generating confidence and credibility, Yanacocha has been assuming commitments to society, in order to comply with what is raised from January 2007 Yanacocha launched a systematic plan for whichIt was necessary for the company to implement a consistent process of collection and validation of minutes;definition of scope of the community;and time and budget programming to finally schedule the execution of them. "From January 2007 to September 2009, a total of 302 pending compliance commitments were invented, of which 245 for an approximate amount of 32 million dollars has been complied with". It should be noted that the fulfillment of these commitments also depends on the management that the interested community carries out in each case and that they are under their responsibility, such as passes, authorizations, resolutions for the use of springs, sanitation of land, obtaining ministerial resolutions, among others.
In the field of Yanacocha education aims. Likewise, it contemplates the implementation of projects that contribute to reducing illiteracy rates and improves educational quality in the area. To be able to carry out the indicated Yanacocha, perform the Alternative Basic Literacy and Education Program (PAEBA) “Project that has been promoted since 2007 in coordination with the regional and local authority in order to contribute to reducing the illiteracy rates inOur field of influence.”Likewise, it seeks to increase school performance and reduces both the repeary and the dropout of the students with the Integral Red of Schools of Cajamarca (PRIE). In order to promote the sustainable development of Cajamarca, Yanacocha decided to create “the Los Andes de Cajamarca Association” (ALAC), a corporate organization that promotes sustainable human development in the online region with Yanacocha’s social responsibility principles. ALAC activities are organized in strategic objectives that point to 3 key areas such as: development of business capacities, development of institutional capacities and human capital development. For the fulfillment of this section, the mining company contributes to generate knowledge, skills and attitudes to promote enterprises and the creation of competitive and sustainable local companies in time in the sectors with competitive and market potential (tourism, agribusiness, crafts and forest transformation), both in the rural and urban area of Cajamarca. “The financed projects have allowed the generation of 2009: 17,698 new jobs generated;16,933 people adopt best practices and technologies;3,153 people develop new productive activities;US $ 50’098.008 in sales;US $ 23’752,931 Increase in the value of assets of companies and families ”.
La Minera with the aim of caring for the health of the population, and especially the residents of their area of influence since the beginning of their operations has been focusing their attention on issues that contribute to improving health by the residents of their area of influence. Therefore, the company has been working on the construction and expansion of drinking water systems, latrination and infrastructure that improves access to health services within the scope of its operations and in the implementation of projects that contribute to reducing malnutrition ratesIn our field of influence – Food Security Projects -. Additionally, preventive health care campaigns are carried out in the field of influence with the participation of medical staff of the Ministry of Health. Among its outstanding achievements are: “A total investment of more than 3.1 million soles, 882 families have implemented healthy environments in their homes and are developing healthy practices in the Baños del Inca district. 233 families produce food for self-consumption, 1637 families have implemented healthy environments and develop healthy practices in the district of Cajamarca and La Encañada. 362 families from La Encañada and 1275 families from Cajamarca in the first phase (April – October) ".
Considering that livestock is one of the main economic activities of Cajamarca, Yanacocha and other important entities joined with the aim of promoting and improving livestock in the region and for this they created Foncreagro. This program has: five demonstrative pilot centers for livestock management, a fertilizer production plant to improve soil fertility, a service center with inputs for livestock and agriculture, a liquid nitrogen production plantTo supply the genetic improvement programs in the region, a comprehensive control program of the hepatic fasciola (endemic disease that affects the livestock production and health of people), a program to improve family conditions at the level of ordering level of orderingHousing and improving food and availability.
In order to boost the development of productive activities of the area that boost the family, local and regional – agricultural, crafts, forestry, among others – and allow the population to be inserted into the local and regional market, the company has prioritized theDevelopment of productive projects, the strengthening of local capacities and the maintenance of road infrastructure that facilitates access to the market and allows articulating to the hamlets of the scope of our operations. To comply with what was raised by the company I created the livestock development program, aimed at boosting the local economy through the optimization of the agricultural production system through the improvement of pastures, genetic, animal health, training and innovation and technological transfer;Likewise, seeking to improve the living standards of the artisans, it created a strategic alliance between the District Municipality of Baños del Inca (Cofinanciator), Financial Association for Development of Cajamarca – AFIDEC and Yanacocha (Cofinancer), so that through trainingtechnical-productive-arts and business organization artisans can insert their products into the market, improving their quality of life.
In conclusion, the company has been responsible for contributing to the solution of problems of the population of the region, implementing principles and policies to achieve them; It has also been responsible for implementing programs for the correct management of water, both within the same company and that of the settlers, has been responsible for fulfilling the commitments it has with society to improve relations with the population; In the education sector, La Minera has created literacy programs, competition for students in the region seeking to improve students’ performance; To promote sustainable development, Yanacocha created an organization that focuses on three points: development of business capacities, development of institutional capacities and human capital development generating knowledge, skills and attitudes to promote enterprises and the creation of competitive and sustainable local companies in The time in the sectors with competitive and market potential in the region.
