Brief biography of scientist Marie Curie

Maria Salomea Sklodowska-Curie, better known as Marie Curie, was a scientist who made huge discoveries for the areas of chemistry and physics. This scientist was born on November 7, 1867 in Warsaw, Poland. She was the winner of 2 Nobel Awards throughout her life for the great discoveries and contributions of her to the area of ​​science, and she was also the first woman to win Nobel awards, and the first person to win them in different branches of the science. The first was granted in 1903, accompanied by Henry Becquerel, in the scientific branch of Physics. The second, she received it individually in 1911, in the area of ​​chemistry. She was the first female professor at the University of Paris. She also founded the Curie Institute, which is one of the leaders in chemical and medical research. Marie Curie was married to Pierre Curie, who was also chemical and physical, and also shared the achievement of the Nobel Prize with her wife. At the age of 24 she began her career as a scientist by moving to France. Subsequently, she died at age 66 in 1934, in France.

Marie Curie received most of her recognition thanks to the discovery of the chemical elements Polonio and Radio. She discovered the polonium with her husband in 1898, and appointed him after her country of birth. The polonium has an atomic number of 84 and was the first radioactive element discovered. This element is not very commonly found in nature, and is used for antistatic brushes. The radio discovered it in 1898 too. This element she discovered it next to her husband and the chemist André-Louis Debierne. This is an element that, like polyonium, is highly radioactive. The radio has atomic number 88 and its use was for the manufacture of watches, but because of its radioactivity, it stopped using for this. Now, this element is sometimes used for medicine, in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Another reason why Marie Curie is recognized is that she was one of the first people to study radioactivity and created new techniques to isolate radioactive isotopes. She also studied the application of isotopes in neoplasms, which is called as the growth of an abnormal tumor or tissues in the body. In the time of World War I, she helped forming the first radiological centers for the use of the military.

Unfortunately, her life was shortened by aplastic anemia caused by radiation.

In conclusion, Marie Curie was very helpful for the chemistry branch, since she contributed with the discoveries of new chemical elements and discoveries on radioactivity.
