Beyond religion: Biblical Reading

According to the Catholic religion, hell is the place where people who have killed and who in life were not the best go there. Dante Alighieri’s hell is a poetic work that is written by third. Dante divides his hell into nine circles, which go downward depending on the seriousness of each sin.

In this world there are malicious beings such as demons, among others; And they are responsible for making each of those who are in that circle suffer. In the divine comedy, Dante goes to hell without having died since he goes in search of his beloved Beatriz. He describes that the first five circles of hell are part of high hell and the last four are part of the lower hell. To make this trip Dante does not go alone, but his teacher goes with Virgil. Beatriz sends him to be Dante’s guide for hell and other worlds. All hell -related actions show the suffering of souls who did not regret their sins.

The sins are ordered correctly since they begin by the unbaptized, then the lustful ones go, then the gluttons, the greedy, the cholericas, the heretics, the violent, the fraudulent and finally the traitors. According to Dante these are the most serious sins in his time. The importance of sins is changing as time progresses and how society behaves.   Hell has a cone shape which is divided. At the tip of hell is where Lucifer is, and the more bad you have been in life closer to him. While external circles are sinners with less serious.

To enter hell they must cross a river guarded by Cáron. He is a boatman who is responsible for bringing the souls to the other shore of the river, where they enter hell so that they are placed in the corresponding circle. Once within its corresponding circle it is very difficult to get out of it since they are guarded by guards. The guards of the different circles are characters that committed this sin and most of them are mythological beings. The second circles is guarded by minos who is an ancient Greek. Then we meet Cerbero, Hades’ dog. In the fourth circle is Pluto. Then phlegias in the fifth circle. In the sixth are the Erinias. In the seventh there is a minotaur that represents the bestiality. In the penultimate circle there is a giant monster. In the last circle, sinners are being convicted, but at the same time guard the circle. Dante had a surprising imagination to consider all the guardians for each circle.

All those who are in hell have something in common and that everyone wants to regret their bad actions and sins that have already committed to save themselves. But it is too late to repent and will remain lamenting for everything they did before entering the worst and horrible place to fulfill their sentence for their actions. Something that surprised me a lot about this work is that it is formed by several aspects with the number three.

First of all, it is divided into three worlds, and each world has 33 songs. The number of main characters are three Dante, Beatriz and Virgilio. The form of writing is very good since there are times when we can resemble the feelings that Dante had at that time. Other things that can be mentioned is that Dante wanted to reflect the way things were seen after dying and reflecting them as was written in the Bible.

This work cost me to read it, since it has many metaphors and the intervention of the characters confused me a little. But what costs the most is to relate it to the knowledge of the culture to which Dante belonged and wrote. The divine comedy is a work of great importance since it tells us about the trip that Dante had to do for the three worlds hell, purgatory and paradise. It teaches us the responsibility of our actions in relation to the last day of our lives and that we need to give accounts to God.
