Becquer XLI Rima Study

The author of this work is Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, this work is one of his famous rhymes, specifically the XLI rhyme. Becquer was born in 1836 in Seville, in the literary stage of romanticism. This, had a great artistic talent, and at 18 he went to live in Madrid, there he had many relationships, which ended not very well, even so, I ended up getting married. In 1870 he suffered from tuberculosis. As mentioned above, this work is located in the romantic stage with the reign of Isabel II, due to this reign the amount of liberals increasing numerously and the exaltation of feelings was very marked, especially in the defense of freedom andThe desire for evasion embodied in numerous works of the time.

The theme of this poem is loving, specifically, refers to a break since at the beginning it says: “You were the hurricane, and I the high tower that challenges its power. You had to crash or fold me!" . When it says to fold me, it can refer to rejection or rupture and the same at the end of each stanza since it says it could not be! repeatedly therefore it can be taken for granted that refers to a relationship with an end, an end in which the protagonist is rejected by the other person. This issue was very common in Becquer’s works since before marrying, during his youth, he received numerous rejections, which he reflected in his poems.

As for the external structure, it is formed by three stanzas of four verses all of them. The rhyme is assonant in the even verses (4/6/8/10/12) and consume yourself in verses 1,3,5 and 7. As far as I know, it does not follow any poetic structure, and you can notice the executions in the second verse of the first and second stanza since there is no pause with the previous.

On the other hand, this is the internal structure, the poem can be divided into two parts, the first is the first two stanzas, in which the personality of each is commented in a metaphorical way since they are compared to other beings, then this is thesecond part, in which we are shown in the third stanza, how shocking their personalities are and how proud are.

You can also find some stylistic resources, such as a parallelism of stanzas 1 and 2, since they have the same syntactic structure. There is also an antithesis that encompasses the entire poem since they are cosntantly colliding personalities, ideas, way of being … You can also see metaphors in verses 1 and 5 in which they manifest themselves as objects of nature. The amount of the use of pronouns is also notorious, since it repeatedly mentions the pronouns you and I at the beginning of each stanza.

To conclude, there is nothing that highlights more than the rest in the poem, since it is quite regular and has a constant presence to rejection throughout the poem. This rejection as I said before, is related to Becquer throughout your life. Finally I must mention that this is one of its famous rhymes.
