Babel’s library is a story written by Jorge Luis Borges
The library, as indicated from the beginning, is the universe, and is constituted in several equal spaces whose characteristic is that they are hexagonal. Each space in turn possesses the walls full of books, small sleeping rooms or bathrooms, and several corridors that communicates with other hexagonal spaces. Each hall presents stairs that communicate with other exactly the same levels. The halls also have a mirror, which, according to the author, relates them to nature. This is the physical form that the author presents to the library. The author tells us that when he was young, he looked for a book there, while, now, he is already old and expects death, believing that when this happens, someone will arrive and throw his body through the railing to immerse himself in perpetuity. It also describes how the library walls are. Each wall has five shelves, with thirty -two parallel books. Each book in turn has four hundred ten pages, with forty lines on each page and eighty characters for each line. And that the cover of the books contains a title, but that the titles are not related to the content of the book.
Borges tells us the two main standards of the library: it has always been there, so it must have been created by a deity, and which contains exactly twenty -five different symbols. With this, the message we intend to give us is that we are unknown to the endless content of the library, since the world we live in has more than twenty -five characters. Also, most of the books contained in the library, apparently, seem to make no sense.
On the other hand, who have inhabited the library, had different opinions about why all this. They reflected if the books could be written in another language or encryption. But, as we are told, once a man discovered the mystery of the library: he showed that all books are different, which means that the entire content of the library is what can be put into writing and in all languagesdemonstrable. At first, this revelation was celebrated. The inhabitants of the library thought that the truth was outside and what they should do to reach it was to go out. The inhabitants went out to look for the truth, looking for their history, not finding it, ended up killing or touching madness. On the other hand, another group of inhabitants decided to look for the book to reveal the origin of everything. They did not achieve their purpose.
This stage of hope gave way to a disappointment. Some inhabitants thought they could have more luck by throwing dice and writing their sacred books. The purifiers, on the other hand, decided that it would be best to destroy every book that made no sense to be able to find the sacred, but due to the immensity of the library it could not be carried out.
The author also tells us a restlessness during this stage, a divinized image that was known as the "book man". With this it means that somewhere in the library there is a book that can unravel and explain all the books, and someone may already read it. The one who has read it would become a God and the author shows us his conviction that this book must be somewhere and that he wants someone to have had the opportunity to read it.
Although the library is shown as a constant chaos, the author is reluctant to think that there is a book that is meaningless. He states that there is no combination of letters that do not have a hidden explanation in another language within the library. It also tells us that humans are at the limit of their own end, but that the library will continue to posterity.
Finally, the author shows us how he can affirm that the library survives at the end of the days, although his books are not infinite. The solution it gives is that if you run in a straight direction, without diverting, you will find the same books. This reiteration of chaos in turn is what creates the order of all things, of the universe. This argument is what gives hope.
