Analysis of a “The Tempest” fragment by William Shakespeare

An analyzed fragment belongs to the last work written by William Shakespeare "The Tempest", and is in the second part of the third act. The work was first represented in 1611 at the Whitehall Palace in London and is one of Shakespeare’s shortest works, since the entire plot takes place in a single day. Its structure is compact and is tight to the classic units of place, time and action.

The work is written in verse and prose and contains a light rhythm. The cadence of the yambic pentimeter, or English white verse, which is a type of five -foot verse of yambo, each of which is usually composed of two syllables, one not accentuated and another accentuated, and an optional syllable not accentuated in the end, it is less marked by the abundance of entries, which remain the rhythmic power of those five verses. It contains a metric without rhyme, widely used by William Shakespeare to compose much of his dramatic work. In "The Tempest" it contrasts the rhetoric of the noble characters expressed in verse with the prose dotted with expletives and blasphemies of the servants, although all commit the same sin of sedition.

The work opens with a strong storm in the sea unleashed by Ariel (to the mandate as a prosperous), when he guess his brother Antonio travels on a ship near the island where he is located. In it, Prospero has the company of his daughter Miranda and rests with his numerous books dedicating himself to the study and knowledge of magic. That island (place where all dramatic action will be developed) is not any island in the middle of the sea. Retrospectively, Prospero tells us that on the island the Sycorax Witch inhabited, which had a prisoner to Ariel (winged spirit that represented the wind and mysterious forces of nature). But it is also not an ordinary being, it is endowed with mysterious powers that were once able to submit and kill Sycorax. Thus, it was also how Ariel was released, and Caliban adopted and, although they wanted to educate him well, his education was ineffective because they did not get good results.

In this fragment of the work, Caliban (a deformed and monstrous native) tells Stephano the story of how a magician snatched the island while Ariel (sent by prosperous to cause disputes between the men of the island) interrupts them and, asIt is invisible, they think that it is a trinculo (the jester) and Stephano assaults him and tells him to leave (“Stand Farther.") So that Caliban can continue with its history. He tells Stephano how he can become the owner of the island and wants to take him where the magician is so that, when he is making the nap ("’ Tis a Custom With Him, I ’Th’ Afternoon to Sleep "), remove your books ("Having First Seized His Books") and kill him with a blow to the head ("There Thou Prov Brain Him") ("Or with a logo Batter His Skull") or destroying it with a stake ("OR CUT HIS WEZAND WITH THY KNIFE"). Prospero has acquired his magical arts in the books, which has assured him the dominance over the island and the submission of Ariel and Caliban, which tells Stephano that if he takes them away ("Remember First to Possess His Books") and burns the magician loses all his powers and is defenseless and as foolish as he himself (Caliban). He also tells him about the beauty of his daughter Miranda ("And That Most Deoply to the Beauty of His Daughter") and compares her to her own mother, Sycorax (“But Only Sycorax My Dam and She;But She ace Far Surpasseth Sycorax as Great’st Does Least ”), claiming that I had never seen such a woman ("I Never Saw a Woman,"). Stephano is amazed with her words and her reference to the lady, wondering if she will really be as beautiful as Caliban describes her ("Is it so brave a lass?"). Miranda represents the purity of the high ideals: justice, equality, freedom, brotherhood. The prosperous awareness survives to exile, only thanks to these high ideals, which allow it to move forward during exile.

After narrating his story, Caliban manages.

The question of language is part of the theme of colonization and also of the opposition between nature in its primitive state and art or culture, receiving an extremely complex treatment. For the colonizers, the sounds emitted by the natives were another sign of their barbarism. The savage does not receive human categorization, being conceptualized as an object or thing. Caliban is an indomitable black slave, brutally punished and tortured. Pospero regrets how useless it has been trying to educate him, extract from animality and teach him his tongue, because he only uses it to spit injuries and curses, since if he had not arrived prosperous, he would be the king of the island, whom he has legitimateLaw for his mother, the former inhabitant of the same, the witch Sycorax.

Caliban, expresses the instinctive aspects of prosperous, his unconscious, the animal fund of human beings, reluctant to civilization, lustful and full of energy. Despite the dangers that it entails, it is not possible to do without it, because it lies in force. Shakespeare reaches a special success when describing the shared character of the unconscious and instincts, by placing two sailors and the monster under the same blanket, since he chooses the exotic version of the native superimposed on that of the wild man that already existed in medieval Europe. The savage occupied an intermediate place between human beings and beasts, between reason and instinct, virtue and vice, moral and immoral.

Caliban sees prosperous as a magician who has learned his magic from books, and, without them, it would be nobody, not as his own mother Sycorax, the witch to which he prosperly snatched his life to become the owner of the island. The magic of prosperous is considered "Blanca" and Beninga in contrast to that of the witch Sycorax, crossed out of Maligna. However, when examining the powers of prosper. Caliban knows that the power of the magician is in his numerous magic books and that is why he urges and Stephano to snatch them to get the success of his rebellion. Although some criticisms allude that they were the unprepacerious expeditionaries, in the exclusive search for their own benefit, those who corrupted the natives, such as Stephan and Trinculo do with Caliban, which they get drunk and from which they take advantage of accessing to ally with him to overthrow the prosperous.

"The Tempest" is neither a speech on colonialism nor a mystical will, referring to the false interpretations that have given themselves from the work. It is a comedy with magical elements that shows the revenge of a Duke, his victory and his forgiveness against those who had betrayed him. There are clasions about the Government of the countries, idyll between two lovers and comic scenes. There is a general metaphor about power. All this seasoned with the presence of Caliban, monstrous wild, which cannot be defended as a symbol of indigenous emancipation.

In the final act, he prosperous reveals his true identity and summons his brother to return the Duchy of Milan, only forced, Antonio restores the duchy. However, prosperous, he extends his forgiveness and renounces his magic by throwing his books at the bottom of the ocean and freeing Ariel, finally triumphing order and civilization.
