Academic Stress in University Students

Stress today is a very named health problem. It is known that it is a state of nerve tension product of a stressful agent, which produces both physiological and psychological reactions. It should be mentioned that any individual is exposed to stress at some point in his life, either in the academic, social, labor, among others, among others.

In the academic field, stress is a systemic, adaptive and psychological process, which arises when the student is subjected, to a series of stressful demands such as tasks, exams, competition between colleagues, etc. It has been evidenced that it is a very common health problem in students, responsible for the low academic performance and sometimes the student failure, but despite this, it has not given it enough importance.

Entering a university career implies a critical adaptation period that raises various challenges, which can develop some level of stress that trigger emotional, cognitive and physiological problems. Considering that stress is an adaptive phenomenon of people, the way in which students cope with their passage through the university stage is regulated by adaptation to stressful factors. So when he cannot develop a relatively rapid adaptation or does not have the necessary resources to face the current situation, academic stress will arise.

Among the main stressors in students is the responsibility that the individual has with his family, that is, the trust he does not want to disappoint. Tasks, jobs, exams is another stressful agent, due to the rigor with which they are qualified. The way teachers teach classes, also influences stress since their rigidity and demand is high. In addition, competition with colleagues, the economic field, and a series of factors that generate stress in university students can be mentioned.

Stress in university students is an undesirable reality that live daily, originating a series of consequences and among the most common, depression or anxiety, bad memory, frequent headaches, lack of energy or concentration, neck or rigid jaw, tiredness, problems sleeping or sleeping too much, use of alcohol or drugs to relax and loss or weight gain. It can also generate low self – esteem, therefore demotivation is feasible, which can produce low academic performance and even academic failure.

To avoid this, various strategies can be used. The most important, is to identify everything that stress us as students, a list can be made with all the activities we have and get rid of those that stress us. Another point is the organization of time to carry out all activities during the day. Deleting distractors such as Facebook, Twitter, television among others when doing some task or studying is another important factor.
