Larry Joe Bird Drive: The Story of My Life Name Tutor Course Date Larry Bird Larry Joe Bird was born on December 7th, 1956 in “West Baden Springs” to Georgia and Claude Joseph Bird. Due to their financial status, his mother had to work multiple jobs so as to provide basic needs for him and his five siblings. Unfortunately, during his time in high school, his parents divorced, and his father later died of suicide a year later. In view of the troubles within his family, Larry had to find a way to escape from the depressing situation. He made a decision to play basketball for “Spring Valley High School.” He was at the top of his game in his senior year, and this earned him a position in the school’s history as being the leading scorer. Having successfully shown skill in basketball, in 1974 Larry was awarded a scholarship to play for “Indiana University Hoosiers.” His stay did not last. In less than a month, he decided to leave school as the change from a simple life to a more sophisticated environment was not something that he was comfortable with. He returned to his hometown and joined Indiana State University, playing basketball for the Sycamores. With his talent in the game, he was able to steer them to the “National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament” for the first time in the school’s history and later against the State of Michigan for the championship game in 1979. Despite their defeat, the game had a higher rating than any other ever played due to Larry’s skills together with the other team’s top player, “Earvin Johnson.” He received recognition, and this made him receive the end of year awards and honors for
