George Orwell, Rebellion on the farm
In 1924 in the USSR, Stalinism began, being a set of doctrines and thoughts of the socialist leader Iosif Stalin, the work rebellion in the farm reflects us demonstrating how this thought and doctrines implanted in the population strongly affected as an individual repressing their ideasAnd his freedoms that each human being has by right, therefore the work is conceived as a satirical wake up against the Stalin government.
George Orwell, true Eric Blair, son of a Scottish family, was born in Motihari, India, in 1903, while the country was still under British domain. He studied at the English College ETON, I was part of the British Imperial Police for those date Orwell was sent to cover the Spanish Civil War by an English newspaper. There he was impressed with how the mismanagement of the Soviet government would lead to a great crisis for citizens.
In 1945 he published rebellion on the farm, the novel stands out in being a futuristic satirical fable about a farm where animals take power and form their own government, which would end up becoming a brutal tyranny. The reason for the prologue to have this theme is because the author wanted to attract attention to these facts and because the novel was rejected by four editors as a result of the popular censorship received by the literary works of this style.
Rebellion on the farm is considered one of the most important novels of the twentieth century. It has been translated into fifteen languages and was chosen among the 100 best English speech novels by Time magazine, in addition to retrospectively winning the Hugo Fantastic Literature Award in 1996. The work has been adapted twice. In 1954 a British animated version was made directed by Halas and Batchelor, and in 1999 a television film with real image was made, directed by Joseph Stephenson.
‘I would not want to see the USSR destroyed and I think you have to defend it if necessary. But I want people to disappoint her and understand that she must build their own socialist movement without Russian interference ’.
Stalin’s socialist regime that is reflected in the work shows us a futuristic dystopia criticizing Russian Stalinism; Therefore, the characters that appear in the book, highlight similar and similarities with the most characterized people of the time where the USSR began to grow significantly in European regions with both foreign policies and economics.
George Orwell distrusted the policy of parties and even more of the leftist intellectuals, whom he called "Bolsheviques de Salon", and to those who because of living in a ivory tower, unable to cross the barriers that separate them from classes from classesworkers and their very few developed ideas about progress and industrialization.
The novel has a systematic writing in such a way that we observe that as time goes by the Napoleon pig that represents Stalin and as his doctrine of socialism where all animals had to eat and live equally adding personal protection for NapoleonAs can be seen in Chapter III where the following presents us:
Everyone on the farm helped, I was leaving as planned, everyone ate equally, and everyone worked, one of the dogs had had young and Napoleon, one of the leading pigs, took them and I grew up hidden.
As we know each authoritarian government has military and police forces that help them control the masses so that citizens do not cause a coup d’etat in this case Napoleon decided to raise the puppies of a bitch who gave birth, the puppies would be their police forcethat had as its main duty to maintain order among the animals, when relating it to the Stalin government it can be said that it would be called the KGB that was the secret police which had the duty to stop parties that arose and oppositions that would cause their authoritarian regime to beSee in danger.
However, as in every government citizens must be governed to a supreme political law that is implemented by the leaders in which they are obliged to obey, in this case the animals implemented the sietes commandments of the animalism that each animal had as a must follow andRespect it.
The seven commandments
- Everything that walks on two legs is our enemy
- Everything that walks on all fours or has wings is our friend
- No animal wears clothes
- No animal will sleep in a bed
- No animal will drink alcohol
- No animal will kill another animal
- All animals are equal.
The seven commandments were implemented when the animals gave their revolution against their caregiver Mr. Jones who had the same characteristics as Tsar Nicolás II of Russia, he was expelled from his land and cease to be the owner of the animals. The two smart snowball pigs characterized by being very brave and bold giving a resemblance to Leon Trotsky and Napoleon being arrogant, arrogant and very ruthless giving a very clear relationship with Stalin.
These two pigs began to have disputes of who would be the new leader thus taking Napoleon satanize the name of snowball in his favor after his dogs chased him until exile from the farm, by getting rid of snowball Napoleon takes the leadership the regime has the same characteristicsThat the Stalin regime where freedom of expression was prohibited, animals felt oppressed with forced labor and a deplorable life.
Napoleon’s tyranny increases to the point of forcing innocent animals to ‘confess’ false crimes of betrayal and caused their police to slaughter them in front of all the farm animals after him and the other pigs begin to sleep in beds and drinkalcohol. The commandments begin to be modified to justify the behavior of pigs, so ‘no animal will drink alcohol’ becomes ‘no animal will drink excess alcohol’.
At the end of several events such as the wars between humans and animals, the creation of the mill that was Snowball but Napoleon SatanizIn chapter 10 where some years had passed and there was almost no animal left of the time of the revolution. The farm had been extended and the mill had ended. One day the animals saw the pigs from the house and were walking on two legs and wearing clothes. One of the oldest animals noticed that the commandments had been removed from the wall and replaced with the phrase:
"All animals are the same, but some are more equal than others".
One day Napoleon invited neighboring farmers to play poker and drink alcohol. After they did, a fight between humans and pigs for the poker match, and the animals that watched from the window no longer knew who was human and who animal realized that all the circumstances that went through not stopping it to NapoleonI take a strongly horrible crisis in the farm where the life of each animal was no longer satisfied and with well -being, however that life was systematically worsened.
In summary, the Stalin regime began to end the life of citizens by denoting them and a good living oppressed by a doctrine that in this work is reflected both in the events that it brings in an orderly manner even as in the future not far awayshown in the last chapters, most of them have already died and the rules of the Sietes Commandments were total modified for the benefit of pigs taking them to the point of not remembering what their life was before Napoleon is in power in power.
