He has valiant attempts to ensure that his family needs are catered. The mother of his five-year-old son, Christopher, buckles under the constant financial strain. Eventually, she is unable to cope and opts to leave. Gardner is left in the care of his son. As a single father, Gardner continues to pursue his job by the use of every sales skill he possibly can. He eventually runs out of finances to pay for his housing and is forced into a homeless lifestyle. An opportunity comes by as he lands an internship at prestigious stocks brokering company. However, this internship comes without a salary. His hope with the job is that he will eventually end the program having landed a well-paying job and a promising future. Meanwhile, he and his son are forced to sleep in shelters or public bathrooms as a refuge for the night. Despite all these challenges, he honors his commitment to being a loving and hardworking father. He obtains the energy to carry on from the trust and affection placed to him by his son.
