Introduction

Ecuador is a country located in South America, the city of Quito is its capital. It has a population of approximately more than 16.000.000 of inhabitants and has an extension of 283.561 km² their demography and culture, from ethnicity to spoken languages, have been influenced by their long history of Amerindian peoples, the Inca Empire and the Spanish colonizers. But what language is spoken in Ecuador?

Ecuador is considered a multilingual country, however, with the Spanish language as the main language, this is in the number nine in the list of countries with the greatest Spanish -speaking population, but also in addition to that language there are several indigenous languages, the most spoken of Quichua being the most spokenor Kichwa.

Spanish is the official language of Ecuador;Quichua and Shuar are also official languages, but intercultural relationship. There are other ancestral languages, but these are exclusively for indigenous peoples in the areas where they still live.  The most spoken indigenous language is Quechua, with approximately 1.161.800 speakers, in all its variants. Other native languages are: Shuar, Chapalaachi, Achuar, Media Language, Awapit, Wao Terero and Tsáfiqui.

Also, there are other indigenous languages that are running risk of disappearing in Ecuador. They are less than 1.000 native speakers for: El Cofán, Siona, Secaya, Emberá, Záparo. And unfortunately some are already registered that are currently extinct such as: Caranqui, Pasto, Cañari, Puruhá, Esmeraldeño, Panzaleo. Regarding the most spoken immigrant languages in the country are: the German, Chinese, French, Portuguese and English.

The Spanish language

Spanish is spoken as the first language by 93% of the Ecuadorian population, however this language in Ecuador has three variants: Costeño, Andino and Amazon, the first two being the most relevant, since the great majority the population lives inThese regions. The coastal variant is spoken in the Costa region and also in the Galapagos Islands, the Andean in the Sierra and the Amazon region in the Amazon region, as expected each variation presents its own particularities.

The Quichua language

Quechua is the second most spoken language in Ecuador, and it is also the first language for 7.1% of all the population. It is an official language in the areas where it is used;These are the inhabitants who use each of their respective variants: the main language of Ecuador is Spanish as mentioned before, approximately 93% of the Ecuadorian population speaks it. This language was first introduced by the Spanish colonizers during the 16th century and became the language of government, business and religion to the point of adopting it completely.

One of the official languages in Ecuador is Kichwa, which is spoken by 1 and 2 million people. In the country, most Kichwa speakers are in the Chimborazo Highland region. In 1940 a movement began to reintroduce this language to the Public Education curriculum, this initiative was strengthened in between 1970 and 1980. Today, this language is part of the national curriculum.

On the other hand, Shuar is spoken by about 35,000 people. Those who speak the Shuar inhabit the provinces of Morona Santiago and Pastaza, the same part of the Amazonas region, southeast of the country. This language was rescued by Catholic missionaries who visited the region and carrying out a radio school project in 1960. This project lived until the Government closed it in 2001 and assumed the Shuar language as part of a bilingual national curriculum.

Apart from the Kichwa and Shuar languages, other indigenous languages are spoken in Ecuador, these are: Záparo, Waorani, Tetete, Siona, Secoya, Emberá, Colorado, Cofán, Chapalacio, Awa-Cuaiquer and Achwa-Shiriwa. Of these languages, the AWA-Tuaiquer is one of the most used in the country. It is part of the barbecue family and is the language of indigenous peoples Awa-Kwaiker. Its native speakers are approximately 13 thousand, who live mainly in the northern region of Ecuador near Colombian south.
