Gender differences over time

Introduction

The differences between men and women over time have caused society to give more value to sex, that of men. This has caused women to have disadvantages in different aspects and one of them occurs when receiving a salary in the workplace less than men. There are several professions where these salary gaps are more noticeable, one of them is civil engineering, which according to gender roles and stereotypes, is better performed by men.

In Mexico, civil engineers have a monthly salary of approximately $ 10,223 while civil engineers earn approximately $ 14, 009. All this shows us how in the 21st century, being men or women continues to mark our lives, we cannot continue tolerating this situation, the gender wage gap must change, we must reflect on this issue and we must try to find a solution.

Developing

Causes:

  • Sexism: beliefs about women’s inability to perform in math related professions and that are usually more associated with men.
  • Gender roles: It is considered that the right thing for a woman is to perform the homework therefore not so much value in that work.
  • Gender stereotypes: they consider fragile and weak women to correctly exercise that profession.

Impact:

  • Gender gap: difference between the salaries of women and men, coupled with low acceptance to work as engineers
  • Gender discrimination: women are paid less, they are done to work more and many times do not offer them the work they really want.

Analysis tools

  • Genre roles

They are formed with the set of norms and prescriptions (orders, rules, beliefs, etc.) that society and culture dictates on female and male behavior.

Through the roles we have been instilled that the "nature of women" is being the mother and working in domestic, these affect women at the time of working, causing a civil engineering to be seen as unable to work since it is considered that the right thing and for what is good is for home work.

  • Gender stereotypes

Conceptions and models about how they are and should be the behaviors of women and men.

Stereotypes cause women to be considered fragile, unstable and without the necessary character to perform a job such as engineering, so it is considered that this profession is not suitable for it.

Once they are working as civil engineering many times they are not offered work in the field but in an office because being a woman and "weak" I would not support working under the sun and surrounded by men.

  • Sexism

It is the devaluation of one sex from the valuation of another sex.

Comparing the salary of women civil engineering with that of men there is a noticeable difference, thus favoring the work of men, in part it is caused by sexism, since preference is given to the work of a man who that of a woman , women are considered unable to that work.

Action tools

  • Gender indicators

They are statistical tools that serve to measure the situation of women compared to that of men in different circles of their life.

Investigate the data that demonstrate and support that the salary gap is present, analyze them so that it has a support and actions can be put into practice to eradicate this.

  • Good gender practices

These are actions that contribute to greater equality between women and men in any area of an organization and with perceptible results.

Implement strategies that show the situation of women compared to men and be able to help these actions decrease.

  • Human rights

They are the set of prerogatives based on human dignity, whose effective realization is essential for the integral development of the person.

Investigate the laws and norms that support the rights of women to finally promote them and make them known among them.

Strategies

  • Promote courses and workshops specialized in labor relations that help modify discriminatory ideas and behaviors towards women and promote gender equity and equality.
  • Implement new salary policies in companies that indicate that salaries will be the same for staff with the same functions regardless of sex, there may be differences given by bonds, for issues of antiquity or any other criterion that does not indicate gender inequality.
  • Establish a mechanism in which your questions and doubts related to compensation and salaries can be expressed, and that the organization adds them and responding.
  • Carry out staff integration events or recreational activities that improve coexistence between staff.
  • Promote the Mexican norm in labor equality and non -discrimination and their certification to recognize the work centers that have egalitarian practices and create a positive image of the work center.

conclusion

The gender salary gap is the difference between women’s salary compared to that of men. According to data from the Secretary of Labor and Social Welfare, in terms of daily salary associated with insured workers in the IMSS, in Yucatan women win on average $ 327.9 while men $ 337.6.
