Waiting for Godot: Samuel Beckett’s play

The play waiting for Godot, by Samuel Beckett, is considered a tragicomedy. It was written between 1948 and 1949 in France. The work was done for the first time on January 5, 1953 at the Babylone Theater in Paris. The work at the beginning was criticized and not understood by the public, since it is a complex work that requires close attention. The reason why each element used in the work is a hidden symbol. If you do not understand the work, all these elements may seem absurd, but they are key elements for the outcome of the work. For example Vladimir’s hat. Many will think that it is simply a hat, but with more analysis of the work, it can realize that the hat represents human thoughts.

This work, for me, was very difficult to understand. This is because I only saw the surface of the work, not between depth. I thought the symbols were just that, that they did not have a greater meaning. This caused me to understand the work in a completely different way. When I realized my mistake, the work completely changed. At first, I cost me a lot to try to understand well, but little by little, all the events that seemed as if they did not fit in history were gathering. I could really understand the work while writing this essay, since I had to analyze the work even more.

During the work, Beckett makes many criticisms of human attitude. He represents these criticism through his characters and his actions. For example, the hidden meaning of Pozzo and Lucky. Pozzo is demonstrated as Lucky’s teacher, who depends on Pozzo. When Pozzo decides that he no longer needs Lucky and leaves him, Lucky is destroyed. This represents how humans depend on someone we consider superior, and when they leave, we no longer know what to do. When Lucky puts on the hat and says his thoughts, there Beckett is criticizing the communication problems that men have. For this, I think Pozzo ends blind and mute Lucky. It is important to know that Beckett lived both world wars, which explains his criticisms of humans. This work is clearly not easy to understand, and much attention is needed to details. Fascinating meeting as Beckett was able to hide so many issues and criticisms within his work.

"As Samuel Beckett is representing the battle of man with himself in his work waiting for Godot".

Many readers will read waiting for Godot and will only see the surface of the book, when it really is much more than that. You have hidden messages about what you can imagine, but to be able to understand all these messages, a very deep and sophisticated analysis is required. Although on the surface it seems that waiting for Godot from Samuel Beckett, it is a tragicomedy about two poorly sad wandering men and their encounter with another pair of sad and confused men, I believe that Beckett was trying to write and communicate the world about the battle of theman with himself. To really understand this issue, it is necessary to know what is the battle of man with himself? The battle of man with himself is something different for all men. It refers to the battle that we as humans have with our own souls, of being able to overcome and achieve what our thoughts believe that our own limit is. For each person this is a different challenge and battle, dependent on your body and state of life, but how Beckett was able to hide this message within such a simple work on the surface?

The two main characters, Estragon and Vladimir, demonstrate their own battle throughout history. These characters, including Lucky and Pozzo, are symbols of whom Beckett believes that humans are, as we act, and how we think. Estragon, whose main concern is to free his sore feet from the tight and smel. He thought that everything one has to do is passively go along with anything that life puts us on our way and everything will eventually be resolved. Why waste time and strength trying to form life in the way we would like? Why fight and fight against the inevitable? If the universe intends to hit or make us suffer, let’s leave it since we are not going to get anywhere fighting. Our life will end one day and it may be that we suffer less during it if we do not fight against destiny, and if the plan of the universe is that we die, that’s fine. These were the theories that Estragon presented throughout history. Overcoming these theories and enjoying life was your battle.

Instead, Vladimir wants more than life gives him. He is still waiting for something to happen to make his life a little more pleasant. He has hope and expects Godot to give him an answer, anyone. Since these two characters are so different, Vladimir cannot understand why he is so satisfied to allow himself to be beaten and humiliated. Vladimir is the side of humans who expect life to magically give us the answers we expect so much and need. It is the side that seeks the help of others to find the treasures and answers that we are so sure that awaits us. Not even Vladimir and Holdogue like their lives very much. So much so that they even think of ending it on a nearby tree, but even if they try, the two know that it will not really happen. I think they have this idea simply as a way of being able to spend time faster. They treat it as if it were a game, and enjoy it. This demonstrates how humans sometimes stop in our problems because, although it is absurd, we as human beings like to feel sorry for ourselves from time to time. Vladimir needs Estragon, but Estragon does not need Vladimir, although he is very happy, but not happy, to spend time with Vladimir. This shows how humans have to convince ourselves that we are worth it. We seek in our conscience the responses of our reason for being and purpose of life. If we don’t care what ends up happening to us, there is no need to have a good relationship with our conscience. Vladimir and Estragon was mutually consciences.

Pozzo and Lucky are seen as distractions for Hardgón and Vladimir while waiting for Godot. When these appear on the scene, Vladimir sees him as an opportunity to get out of his boredom. Could Pozzo be Godot? Nope? Well, it could still be a fun detour while we continue waiting. Pozzo uses Lucky, while he has something valuable to offer him, but when he doesn’t have something left, Lucky loses his attractive appearance and falls into a state of absolute misery. Vladimir and Estragon feel sorry for Lucky’s situation, but they do nothing about it, especially since Lucky is too miserable to believe or want help. It is easier for our protagonists to believe that Lucky is simply someone who has lost the sense of reason and prefers to stay alone. Lucky’s situation is a metaphor as people only see what we can use in a person instead of looking at the person himself. When we get tired of someone or they no longer have what they offered before and that we needed, they become a burden. We become blind to things that attracted us before and that we needed so much. Lucky’s case also allows the reader to realize how humans prefer not to deal with problems that are too difficult and ignore them completely. This makes Vladimir and Estragón when they see that Lucky is too bad and injured. In a bigger vision, once we stop worrying about our fellow men, we become blind to the real problems of the world and oppressed can lose the ability to speak with us.

Man lives his life always waiting. He hopes to be born, he hopes to become a man, he hopes to be successful, he hopes to marry, and he hopes to die. While waiting, also considers and thinks. He discusses himself what path he should take, is the battle of the man. Should you keep waiting for tomorrow to bring the answers like Vladimir or should you forget to look for answers completely as hardly? What happens if those around them are suffering, do you help them? If he helps and he ends up suffering as a consequence, should I give up? The book waiting for Godot shows how man expects life to show him his mysteries. Shows man and his conscience. Shows the inhumanity of man towards themselves. This work is the question of meaning, but is there any meaning? Are we reason to look for an answer or should we only blindly move forward while we can, because the answers, such as Godot, will never come and nothing we think or make will make any difference? Godot is the answer.
