Violence against women and social injustice on a day -to -day life

Social injustice has become the agenda. Violence, sexism, machismo, feminism and prejudices are some of the stigmas that are currently surrounding us. In Puerto Rico, the man as a patriarchal figure tends to have a great domain of women. This is something that looks culturally and we see is transmitted from generation to generation. This is a very comprehensive issue, since it not only affects the victim, but its complete family nucleus. The cases of violence, oppression, discrimination, etc. are so concurrent. that society is no longer amazed. They have learned to see something as harmful as something totally normal, of course not in all cases but unfortunately yes in most of them.

The factors that affect the manifestation of it are due to the fact that violence has been transmitted generationally in Puerto Rican families and the entire world. Home upbringing is vital to determine most cases of violence. All this focuses on the domain and power exercised by the patriarchal figure (men) in women The vast majority of cases, because it is also clear that it also occurs in same -sex couples. Cases of violence begin with minors belonging to a family where they are exposed to violence from an early age, they learn that violence is a tolerable way to relate in the family, to remedy conflicts, brewing with tensions, having control overothers and confuse the true meaning of love.

At an early age when they begin to form relationships with couples, friendships or enter the real world tend to make again those patterns that saw in their upbringing such as domination and violence often acquired from the home. They tend to reinforce these behaviors by society, becoming new and victimizers of violence. When these minors grow and eventually become parents, having raised in environments with violence in their homes, they become more likely to repeat such behavior with their children. So unfortunately little by little it is transmitted from generation to generation.

Puerto Rico is a culturally macho country and this is not a new issue, here violence has been carried out for centuries and this gives that power to the male figure. Unfortunately there have been many women who tolerate these ill -treatment for years as martyrs where she is not only affected, but her children of having any. Many women have had to get up and have the courage to fight for their rights and for a country that is more just like feminists who often confuse that they want to overcome when they only fight for gender equity.

For years and still today, the woman has been subjected to her partner, being marginalized, oppressed and stigmatized. Supporting all kinds of physical, emotional and even sexual abuse of the person who one day promised to love and respect her. They suffer traumas for life for this type of abuse and the day they finally leave that nightmare it is very difficult to trust and give everything to someone again. Emotionally and emotionally barriers can be created, this can torture the person forever, since it is an insecurity and constant fear that his aggressor returns for her or to life cursing her twice with the same type of person. Violence to women is not always seen, many times we can see them walking down the street, smiling and having a normal life without knowing that emotionally they are destroyed. Unwanted sexual relations, blows and indifference as if they were not absolutely nothing more than an object for him is also violence. Many times we confuse everything that happens for love, we think that it will change or that we can simply change it, but it is not because if it does once, it will do it until your body can no longer.

This has reached such magnitude that the ideal would be to have a magical wand to stop this that has come so far. But no, unfortunately it is not possible. You have to look for real alternatives that help counteract the effect of violence and its victims. In Puerto Rico there is Law 54 that protects women from gender violence. Unfortunately there are many true cases that occur day after day on our island even when there are laws that protect the victims.

In addition, there are many institutions that give asylum to these battered women and their children, these are responsible for providing a safe environment to women who decide to end a toxic relationship with an aggressor. Prevention is another vital tool. With prevention it is possible to educate people and prevent them from causing these harmful effects to women who are possible victims that some social worker can provide, since many times we are victims of many abuse, but we ourselves are not capableto see it until another person speaks to us and instructs us about them. Talks of how to know if my partner is an aggressor and about the signs or red flags that we do not see from a principle for love, since these aggressors have a repetitive attitude and behaviors that are always there, since they are part of their personality. Gender equality is very important and is part of our responsibility to teach and educate our children to live a life full of home equity, work, school. Being objective, this is a good alternative that will help counteract machismo and violence from early stages.

It is very unfortunate and creates a sense of helplessness to know that people have not modernized and there is still a macho-cultural thought that sinks us as a society. I am a Puerto Rican woman proud to be. But I don’t feel proud of this. There should be no unequal treatment for any reason. We are all the same and capable. This unequal and oppressive thinking will not allow us to progress, since Puerto Ricans (of course, not all) are being oppressors and we are not open to change. We have to transform. Something that does not grow or evolves, stagnates. This will happen if we do not open our eyes and stop throwing for one side or for the other without analyzing. We deserve to live in a more fair, more human society.
