Veganism and its real problems

Donald Watson was born on September 2, 1910 in Mexborough, a town in South Yorkshire, in England. When he was a child he visited the farm of his uncles, where he witnessed the slaughter of a pig, an event that marked him for life.

In November 1944, the Vegan Society would, and also invent the word Vegan (Vegan, in English, comes from taking the first three letters and the last two of the Word Vegetarian.)

Donald Watson formally defined veganism, although he said at a conference during a congress that:

“Vegans defend the idea that if we want to be true liberators of animals then we must absolutely give up our traditional and selfish attitude of believing that we have the right to use them for our needs. We must meet our needs through forms that do not involve using other animals."

Currently the RAE defines veganism as: “attitude consisting of rejecting food or articles of animal consumption."There are also some variations, such as lactavegetarianism or flexivegetarianism, which do eat dairy products, fruiting, which only eat the parts of the plants that can be collected without damaging them ..

That is, they do not eat anything that is of animal origin, not only do they do not eat meat like vegetarians, but also eat things like eggs or milk. Neither do wool clothing, for example.

In the world there are more and more vegan people, and this raises the following issue, is it due to a posture theme? Can being vegan create health problems?or not?

In my opinion, people can do what they want, but if you take away foods such as meat, or dairy products, you have a problem, since man is an omnivorous being, we do not have the ability to feed ourselves only from plants, this could cause health problems.

What is a reality is that veganism is expanding in a brutal way. The Green Revolution report also includes data from other studies that point towards an imminent growth of the trend in Spain, such as the consumption of red meat decreased by 35 % in 2016 (Nestlé Observatory of nutritional habits and lifestyle). Or that in the United Kingdom, Italy or the US, vegans and vegetarians already represent 10-13 % of the total.

According to another study by the SER chain in 2017, which made through more than 2000 telephone calls, concluded that there are more veggie women (Veggie includes vegans, vegetarians and flexivegerians) than men, since in Spain 1 out of 10 womenThey are or that practically 8% of the Spanish population over 18 is Veggie.

This study also asked about the reasons that made these people be vegan, the conclusions were that mainly 17% did it for ecology, 21% did it because they were worried about their health and the vast majority, 57%For ethics, they fight for the protection of animal rights and seek their respect.

The health issue must also be talked about, vegans defend that a meatless diet is healthier than one that includes meat, but this is not so since there are some vitamins such as the B-12 that are only found in products of originAnimal, so we would have to take supplements of this vitamin, or proteins that are not exclusive to meat, but with a vegetarian diet a large daily amount of foods such as legumes, nuts or seeds should be consumed. Recall that proteins are essential because helping to build and maintain strong muscles, bones, skin or organs.

With a vegetarian diet it is also difficult to obtain iron, which is necessary for blood. Without iron and vitamin B-12 mentioned above, we can have a red blood cell deficiency, which would cause anemia.

But there are not only problems if we don’t consume meat. Without dairy products, such as milk or cheese, we cannot obtain calcium that is essential to keep teeth and bones health. Finally, we must talk about Omega-3, its fatty acids help strengthen healthy tissue, brain development and eye health and cardiovascular health. The omega-3 can find it in fish and eggs, in addition the products enriched with omega-3 fatty acids are very rare and difficult to find.

The most recent example of the problems that this diet can cause can be found in the son of the famous actor Will Smith, Jaden who decided to stop eating products of animal origin and move from the vegetarian diet to the vegan. After a while, the family worried about their status forced him to leave the vegan diet, because in his own words: “We realized that he was not eating enough protein amounts and was being consumed […] had a terrible appearance, as if he were exhausted or sick, it was obvious that he was not receiving the nutrients he needed."

Currently, Jaden has returned to the vegetarian diet, does not eat meat but food of animal origin.

Another of the great beliefs of veganism, as we have seen most people do it for compassion and solidarity towards animals.

There are many people who believe that by stopping eating meat no longer kill animals, but this is not true.

There is a big difference between agricultural fields and farmers, in agricultural fields, even in the most organic, lots of species are not welcome because they can cause damage and losses and these are fought with biocides and poisons, etc ..

To grow rice, those estuaries, streams and riachos are drained to derive their water and many times, end dry or dead, lifeless. Therefore there is no place for carpinchos, deer, river wolves, boas, herons, ducks … how these natural environments are impoverished or destroyed many wild animals seek refuge or food in the crops that have replaced them. And there a second blow is unleashed. To prevent birds or mammals from eating the grains or sprouts, poisoned seeds are spread or wild hunters are brought to banish them based on shots. No one who knows this can say that for not eating meat and feeding with rice, for example, animals are not killed.

On the other hand, in livestock, when many animals can be admired extensively, since these are not eradicated.

These ideas are defended by eminences on this subject, such as Claudio Bertonatti is museologist. Professor of the UNESCO Cultural Tourism Chair, the Argentine School of Naturalists and the University of the Argentine Social Museum. Director of the Environment and Natural Resources Foundation (Farn) and advisor to the ‘Felix de Azara’ Foundation Foundation ’Foundation of Natural History’.

In conclusion we can say that veganism is an idea that is currently widespread, many celebrities are vegans, such as Brad Pitt or Natalie Portman and is an issue that is currently on everyone’s lips. Obviously this does not mean that it is good, because we have already seen, a diet without products of animal origin can be very harmful to our health, because we cannot obtain all nutrients, vitamins … to keep our body healthy and in form, in addition, in additionThis would imply the purchase of food supplements that can reach very high prices.

As we have seen, the vegan being does not meet all the expectations because although a vegan does not want to kill an animal directly to obtain food from it, it does kill them, indirectly, when they intend to build orchards and crops to plantfruits, vegetables or legumes.

In short, veganism is not as good as they make us believe since it carries many and very serious problems.
