"Under the same star" – A novel written by John Green

“Gus, my love, I can’t express how much I appreciate our little infinity. I would not change it for the whole world. You have given me an eternity in those days counted, and I thank you ”;This phrase is said by one of the protagonists of the story, Hazel Grace Lancaster, who is a sixteen -year -old teenage patient with thyroid cancer;Reason why she always has to walk with an uncomfortable artificial respirator. Just reading the phrase, we can understand or rather predict that this novel develops around the issue of death, perseverance and especially love, one of the most important, genuine and incredible emotions that a human being can feelthroughout his life.

Hazel Grace’s parents were worried since they thought their daughter suffered from depression because of her illness, which is why they force her to go to a adolescent support group that, like her, suffer from some terminal disease. In this support group is where he meets the second protagonist, Augustus Waters, whom they usually call Gus. Gus just seventeen years old is the victim of osteosarcoma cancer; This also affects his physicist just like Hazel’s since he lost his right leg and that is why he has to use a prosthesis that allows him to walk. These two characters feel an immediate attraction one for the other and begin to spend a lot of time together. Hazel tells Gus about his favorite book, and expresses that he wants to know the end. These contact the author and he replies that doubts will not respond unless they are seen in person. For economic reasons, they were not going to be able to travel to Amsterdam that was where the author resided, but Gus uses a desire for a foundation and the trip is free, and therefore, possible. Before the Hazel trip he gets sick but heals quickly and the trip is changed dated. When they arrive at Amsterdam, they go to the author’s house and he answers his doubts but since he was under the influence of hacelo haconl and Gus drinks were forced to leave the house. After this they went to Ana Frank’s museum where they gave their first kiss, and that same night at the hotel they had their first love intimacy meeting. When the trip was already finishing, Gus confesses to Hazel that the doctors had confirmed that cancer was effectively growing again after they saw a significant reduction and improves in his illness. He also confesses that he is lost in love with her;Already to this point the love between the two characters is remarkable and painful since they know that this love probably does not last long because of the situation they were going through. Days after he had arrived in the United States, Gus called Hazel telling him that he needs help since he felt quite sick and could not do anything alone. When Hazel arrives at the scene, he finds Gus so desperate and bad that he calls an ambulance so that he could receive adequate medical treatment. Exactly eight days later, Gus dies. When Hazel finds out he feels totally desolate, since he had never felt with someone what he felt for Gus in such a little time. Hazel finds Gus’s last writing about her and feels even more sad and helpless towards life and loss of her beloved.

Anyway, this tragic and interesting novel teaches us to open our eyes and always be grateful for what we have around us. Through several metaphors and similes in the book the author expresses this important lesson. Everyone’s time is limited; You have to live every second to the maximum and every day as if it were the last of our lives. By having a terminal disease, the characters were even more pressured not to let go unnoticed every moment together, making every moment even more personal, unique and special. If there is something that can with everything is love, love destroys when you leave but also cures when you are present. The romance between Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters "cured" and "revive" them in a metaphorical sense, that is to say gave meaning to their lives. We will not know how much we will last, today we are but tomorrow we do not know therefore it is essential to love without limits, take opportunities and thank the maximum.
