Reading is an instrumental activity, in which it is not read to read, but reads for something and for something, signs are interpreted, it reads between the lines. Always behind all reading there must be a desire to know, reading is taken as an instrument that serves to obtain information that will be useful and applicable for something, that is, an end will always be sought.

It is defined as a process where the reader understands what he reads and acquires information through visual symbols that are decoded, that give a graphic idea and structure it in the human brain.

Reading is an activity that the human being performs, either in a visual, oral and tactile way in the case of people who have visual problems, this activity is the interpretation of signs forming words, prayers, paragraphs that have meaning. The reading of the texts is the most enriching medium that the reader has to acquire information and achieve significant learning.

The students of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala Efpem of the Teaching Professionalization Program constantly work with reading texts and thus enrich their vocabulary, expand their lexicon and get a better learning since from the previous knowledge they have when reading they relate it and They get new knowledge to that we call significant learning. In order for the student to obtain a better result in their learning, you must understand what you read, understand and analyze it since it is a means of social and historical information that human beings have. When the individual manages to understand and understand she can paraphrase.

Goodman contributes: “Reading is not simply decoding . When a person approaches a text the goal of it is to understand that text, that is, it reads to understand. Reading must be a reading that the reader understands otherwise it would not make sense to read it. A reader understands a text when he obtains significant learning and finds utility and applies what he reads. This is where the transaction occurs, in an exchange between reading and the reader and finds something that interests you to read this is called interaction.

Goodman (1980a; 1980b; 1994), meanwhile, argues that reading is a complex psycholinguistic riddle game in which the reader reconstructs the meaning through an interaction with the text. In this riddle game the reader, using as little as possible the information offered by the text, using their previous knowledge, her experiences, select the most appropriate information to make predictions, anticipations and riddles and rebuild the meaning. In this sense, the meaning does not reside in the printed, but must be contributed by the reader. According to the author, there is a single reading process for all languages ​​and for all types of text, regardless of their structure or the purposes that motivated the reader to read. 

Reading is important in learning since in school activities the teacher uses it to develop the cognitive area and develop their own criteria and form judgments. Important exercise for the formulation of their own ideas.

It is important to mention that education is a form of liberation of the human being and literacy is the ability to read, therefore, it becomes an essential tool for living. Literacy power to the student and thus becomes a release tool. Literacy has to do with individual and class identity, it has to do with the formation of citizenship includes: written code, understand between lines, discursive genres, author and reader roles, forms of thought, identity and status as individual, collective and community, cultural values ​​and representations.

It is important to highlight that basically reading is the maximum achievement of man, perhaps the most wonderful invention of the human mind and a process so complex that his interpretation would be equivalent to understanding how the mind works. Reading is the ability of a human being to be able to decode and interpret new knowledge, and then interact with their previous knowledge and make significant learning.
