Transsexuality: History of gender incongruity

In 1953 the transsexuality by Harry Benjamin was defined for the first time, who describes it as the relationship between biological normality and certainty of being part of the other sex and, consequently, the desire for change of sex. We talk about transsexuality when there is a disagreement with biological sex, sometimes, this disagree is accompanied by the desire for a change through a surgical or hormonal treatment with the objective that their gender identity and anatomical sex are coincidental. However, when this is accompanied by the feeling of anguish, anxiety and discomfort, we talk about gender dysphoria, a term that arises in 1972 by Money and Ehrdhart.

In 1974 Person and Ovesey, depending on the age at which it appears, difference between primary and secondary transsexuals, classification that is currently in disuse. When the modifications in identity appear from childhood, we are faced with primary transsexualism or also called Core transsexualism, however, if these arise more progressively and late, we refer to secondary transsexualism. Although in most cases this identification occurs from childhood, there are studies that collect that around 20 and 25 years are the average age of people who demand a change of sex. It is very important to differentiate between gender identity and sexual orientation, since a transsexual person as well as the one who did not feel disagree with biological sex, can be heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual or asexual.

As for gender dysphoria, in the MSD-5 manual study this term is used to refer to what was previously called a gender identity disorder, however, this new term is more focused on discomfort than the person suffers, that in your identity. In this manual, two criteria are established for diagnosis; First, an incongruity that occurs between the person’s gender identity and if sex of birth, this incongruity must persist for at least 6 months .The second criterion established for diagnosis is the relevant discomfort or functional deterioration of the incongruity suffered by the person.

Finally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), in CIE-11 the term "transsexual" was replaced by "gender incongruity", a term that becomes part of the section dedicated to "health relative conditions Sexual ”, since the termination used above caused stigmas and was a barrier to access to health care.
