Tomás Moro’s work: Utopia

The text that I am going to comment is called Utopia, it is written by Tomás Moro who was a politician and humanist born in London, studied at the University of Oxford and agreed to the English Court as a jurist. The book was written in Latin and published in 1516 in Paris, in which he criticized the political, social and religious order established under the formula of imagining as an antithesis a perfect community; His model was characterized by social equality, religious faith, tolerance and the empire of the law, combining democracy in the basic units with general obedience to the rational planning of the government. This work has a narrative genre and a story subgenre.

The story is about the island of Utopia, a 54 -cities stay that invents a character named Rafael Hitlodeo, which is a perfect place where everyone lives in place and harmony, Rafael describes what the city is like the subject per subject in the subject in theThat begins with how cities are, in this all cities are the same, so defining only the capital, Amauroto, you can know how the others are: it is surrounded by a high and solid wall, and by a dry and deep pit, on the policy issue every thirty families choose a magistrate to which they call Filarca or Sifographic. Laboring the most common work was that of agriculture and the trade usually goes from generation to generation, people’s clothes were exactly the same within their gender and their own clothing is woven, the city consists of families and theseThey are formed by kinship.

Women when they get married go to the husband’s house, where men and grandchildren remain under the obedience of the oldest. So that the population does not increase or decrease each family must have between ten and sixteen. If a family has excess children, it is transferred to another with shortage, each city is divided into four zones, in the center of each one there is a market provided with everything. Families bring the product of their work to the market. Family heads ask for what they need and take it without delivering money or other compensation. Each neighborhood has large buildings in which the sifogrants and their families live, to cook the women of families, alternating in it. Women do not marry before eighteen and men until twenty -two. The utopics are monogamous and only separate by death, except when there is adultery or insufferable incompatibility, and in both cases the Senate grants the innocent permission to marry and to the culprit a punishment. The inhabitants did not give importance to money or precious stones, so they had neither currency, slaves are also retained with chains and shackles of these precious metals, it is for all this that the utopians do not give them any value,These are also experts in knowledge of the course of the stars and movements of the celestial worlds. The utopians claim that nature prescribes pleasure as a goal of all our actions and defines virtue as the ordered life according to the dictates of nature and all this should be sought together, it also describes the utopians saying that they are agile andVigorous, slaves are this for some crime and have deserved this punishment, or a death sentence in a foreign city.

The laws were made by the Senate but there were not many either, citizens did not usually fight wars but normally tried to pay with gold since this did not care and if that went wrong they hired mercenaries and would pay them, in the religious issueThey talk about various religions throughout the island, they vary in each city. Priests are of great holiness and therefore there are few. There is only thirteen and the same number of temples in each city. The priests are chosen by the people, just like the magistrates and finally end up talking about the calendar being holidays the first and last of each month, and the first and last of the year.

The theme of the book is the perception of perfect life at that time of the time.

This work is divided into two parts, the first book that deals with a dialogue between the characters and the second book in which Rafael describes Utopia and within this are divided into several parts since it is describing the aspects one by one.

In the book you can see the change between one part and the other. Because in the first it is a continuous and thick dialogue and in the second it is a more slow and quiet description.

This story is the living image of the literary topic locus amoenus, because it is continually talking about what would be to live in a place full of peace and harmony.

In conclusion, according to this work Utopia is an idyllic place where everyone would like to live.

In my opinion this book helps to know what would be a perfect life in a perfect place, but surely over time people would end up boring because in the end this type of life is boring and monotonous.
