Today’s digital communication

Introduction

Nowadays it is indisputable that the Internet has established itself as a daily communicative field and that the interactions that occur in the digital medium are equally real than those that occur in the face -to -face world, except that there is no corporeality that does notAccompany relationships in the physical world.

The difference does not lie, therefore, in the reality or virtuality of each context, whether or not the mediation of digital technologies exists or not. The consequences that derive from there are varied and complex, so that an acritic or naive position on the implications of digital technologies should not be adopted, but neither does a ludite or technophybic discourse that demonize their role in the life of people. The birth of each new informative medium has always raised at first a debate between enthusiasts and skeptics, and the Internet is no exception.

Developing

But it is necessary to overcome that polarization and really know and assess critically and nuanced the impact of digital technologies, their opportunities, challenges and risks, in order to make good use of them. In front of reading and writing classical literacy, this digital culture now claims the development of different skills and skills, both instrumental and cognitive-intelectual, sociocultural, axiological and emotional.

Ultimately, digital literacy must prioritize ethical and critical learning from screens, before the technological. This is especially important among young people, because these cannot learn to participate fully in society as citizens and consumers, nor can they have a global assessment of the functions of the media in their lives, without having reflected about their own dietcommunicative.

With the aim of promoting a more deliberate and comprehensive use of digital technologies, about 1 were asked.000 students from twelve universities around the world who abstained during a full day of using the Internet and all mobile technologies and wrote a small diary of that day. It was thus intended that, through their own personal experience and not speculatively, they would become aware of what their media consumption and their level of dependence on digital connectivity were.

The students concluded that the devices to communicate, especially their mobile phones, have literally become an extension of themselves and are part of their personal identity. The young people affirmed that technological-digital connectivity 24 hours a day and a week is not only a habit, but it is essential in the way they build and handle their friends and their social life.

Many students pointed out as benefits of temporary digital disconnection the feeling of liberation, peace, better communication with their family and close friends, and the possibility of having more time to do things that had neglected.

Conclusions

In these conclusions, many of the peculiarities that characterize the digital consumption patterns of young people are pointed out, and even more, the reasons that advise conscious and critical internet use, given their idiosyncrasy as a communicative platform. Like all technology, the Internet is a tool through which man tries to complement or expand some of his innate abilities, and that allows him in this case to support and expand his mental capacity.

It belongs, therefore, to the category of intellectual technologies and, as such, has associated a certain intellectual ethics, that is, a set of assumptions about how the human mind works or should work.

In this, the world of the book is being progressively replaced by the world of screens, which is not exempt from consequences in the way of functioning of the human brain, some of a harmful nature. Just as the printed book served to focus our attention, promoting deep and creative thinking, Internet encourages rapid and distracted consumption of small fragments of information from many sources.
