Directing a work team is not a simple task … but that does not mean that we lower our arms and not try it. There are different techniques that can help you communicate better with your group and get the results you expect.
There are no magical formulas, we all need to learn certain keys even those who take pride in being outgoing and ‘convincing’ people. Success in this case lies in perseverance and commitment.
Tips to direct a work team
If you have never directed a team and now you have the enormous responsibility to do so, then you must start with the most basic that is to meet each of the members. This does not mean being a friend of all, but at least knowing their names and some qualities of their personality. We all like to be called by our name, because it makes us feel important or remembered. Other tips to direct a team:
1. Keep a favorable attitude
A leader is never depressed, tired or demotivated. No matter what the results or problems you have at home … Always keep your proactive attitude for your team to continue working.
If on the contrary you are energetic, you are optimistic and signs commitment, your team will be your faithful reflection.
two. Recognize good results
A leader not only speaks when things are not going well and wants to encourage his employees to change the attitude. He is also present to recognize efforts and congratulate the good results or certain changes that are worth highlighting.
It is not necessary to flatter others or have favorites, but recognize when someone does things right. That person will feel more desire to continue and the rest will want to ‘imitate him’ to also receive a congratulation.
3. Be firm without aggressiveness
I recommend that you see the movie ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ (starring Leonardo DiCaprio). Beyond the plot, pay attention to the way the character had to get the attention of his employees.
Being firm to achieve objectives is not synonymous with being aggressive or rude with the team. You do not need to be a tyrant boss for others to work … that will generate the opposite effect! But be careful, it is not a matter of being too flexible and that the team does not meet the objectives. In balance is the key.
4. Orientate
If you do not see improvements in the team, it is time for ‘to rise your shirt’ and start working. Maybe what is needed is to see you in action. If they do not get sales, you call customers or teach them what is the sale to the public in the store.
Remember this premise: "To achieve different results, you cannot always act in the same way".
5. Achieve authentic communication
Really interest you in your team’s problems (general and also personal) is what will differentiate you. You will be an excellent leader and not a despotic boss. You must learn to communicate and explain what you want and need in the best possible way.
Part of the base that your employees are not inside your head and that they do not know what you are looking for. And if you explain well, they will know what to do. It’s that simple.
